SNOW???
Why does every one keep getting stuck in just a few inches of snow?
When i first began driving we couldn't wait for snow and would be out all night sliding around the country lanes.
Is it modern cars or just lack of driving ability?

I don't understand those people getting stuck overnight on that road in Cornwall. Surely the last person in the queue could do a three point turn and leave, followed by the next, etc.
As for those stuck in '5 inches' of snow, what a joke! When they showed the queue on TV it looked like 1 or 2 inches.
Maybe it's that modern cars have wider tyres than before. These don't grip on snow as well as skinny ones unless they have knobbly tread. Also, roads are getting busier.

I think your right on the tyres - years ago my wife had a Panda (I know....!) and it had 135 wide tyres - it was a demon in the snow, more weight on a smaller area of tyre

lmao!!
we get snow and we get the "UK paralysed by snow" headlines...
ermm so do other countrys....
i was in germany last year, autobahn 8 was blocked on most of the entry roads, (gentle slopes) and it was only 3 inches of the stuff, and the cars were fine.. HGV,s no go (haha)
it took 3 hours to make a 40 minute journey!!!

I think HGVs are a cause of the problem...it only takes one to get stuck, and then part of the road is blocked.
Add another stuck HGV - no-one's going nowhere.......
A car blocking the road can be pushed out of the way.....not really possible with 40+ tons of artic!

I got my Saab stuck in 3 inches of snow on a hill last night, got it out though, secret is to wind lock on and off and it finds grip, learnt that on an off road course, was in a Discovery on wet mud but the technique worked, 2nd gear helps as well.
I always make a point of 'practising' in a car park covered in snow, to get used to the stopping distances and how it handles, apart from the practice element its great fun.

You don't want to be behind them if they see a slightly flooded bit of road either, they obviously haven't forgotten the lesson about emergency stopping
