CRT still better than Plasma or LCD?
Has the game moved on or is CRT still king??
Would a Panasonic 36" CRT 100Hz at £700 make more sense than a 42" SONY Plasma at £1500 or a Sony 37" LCD at £1700??
Should an investment be made in a HD Ready 42" Plasma - at a price of about £2000??
It's difficult to know when to jump in!!

CRT is still king but LCD is not far behind followed by plasma IMHO.
I think you'll find that the Panasonic CRT is HD compliant. I bought a 32" PD50C a year ago and thats HD compatible, but check the specs just to make sure.

Depends, CRT is a huge ugly bulky thing that sits there and does a job, a good plamsa for me does the job just as well and sit ont he wall making the front room look MUCH bigger

I just sent my LCD back - not good enough for SD use and won't be having HDTV for a long time.
CRT is still much better.
However, I need a new TV so will be getting a Sharp P50's series TV - designed for PAL broadcasts and HD Compatible.

HDTV is quite a way off here (UK) so investing in a compliant TV at this stage would be too early. If your after an austhetically pleasing TV go for an LCD/Plasma if your after picture quality I would still recommend a CRT.

HDTV is not that far off. Sky broadcasts starting in the new year if you take the plunge.
Also the XBOX360 is being released next Friday and for that a HDTV is essential.

From a PC point of view yes. From a TV/Movie/Home Cinema point of view, no.

Nearly Pete - got it for £1573. And that included the 5-year warranty from JL.
Went for the Tosh because everyone raved about it over on avforums.co.uk - plus the connectivity was top notch

If you take away the "glamour" of LCD and Plasma all you are paying for is about 12 inches of space behind the picture.I still dont think CRT has been beaten picture wise, which in the end is why you buy a telly.

Cheers paulr ..................... the thing is this, 'The 42" Plasma is quite a lot bigger than a 36" CRT' and as any TRUTHFUL woman will tell you "Size Does Matter, Especially Diagonally!!"

Can I ask how you persuaded John Lewis to price match??
I went into John Lewis in the Trafford Centre, Manchester and they had this set for £1995, I seen it online for £1573 but they said they would only price match a store price.
Good thing about this set is it has 2 HDMI slots and a VGA doesn't it??
If I can get John Lewis to match at £1573 then I'll have it

Nothing rivals CRT for black level and dark detail, other technologies have caught up recently but CRT is still king for ultimate picture quality.
For a lot of people, me included the size limitations of CRT and the lack of HD rules them out.
Dont read too much into contrast ratio, a bright plasma screen with a 3000:1 will still look crap if it can't do decent black levels, judders with HD feeds and is full of artefacts with SD feeds.
If your not wall mounting then the new HD ready DLP and 3LCD sets are worth a look.
Here's a screen shot of the new 50" 3LCD Sony.
Cheers

Have a look on www.avforums.co.uk
The two favourite plasmas at the moment seem to be the Panasonic Vieras - PE50 (42" for around 1400 with stand) and PV500 (42"Around 2k with stand). They are very similar sets, but the PV500 is HD ready.
The reviews I've read say that these two have as good if not better pictures than very good CRT TV's.

I had a 32 inch CRT which had an excellent picture becuase we get a very strong signal from the TV masts.
The 42 " plasma I have got now has at least the picture quality of the CRT and the size of the picture is a positive advantage. The depth of colour is significantly better too.

That CRT, Panasonic TX36PL32, has just been offered to me for £650 this afternoon ............................ its the last one in the shop, I reckon I can get it for £600!
I think this makes sense, gives me a large screen with outstanding picture, at a price that won't break the bank and I'll feel better changing it in 6 years time when 45" HD Ready LCDs are £500!?
The picture is better than the LCDs and Plasmas as far as I can see??
Right? or wrong?
Pete
