Is the acronym "RIP" disrespectful?
Personally I think it is lazy, and thus disrespectful to the dead.
It was also something that was taught to me from as far back as Primary School. The only reason why it was used on headstones was due to "Rest in Peace" (or "Requiescat In Pace" to be accurate ) either not fitting on, or costing too much for the bereaved to have chiseled on.
If somone can't be bothered to type a condelence, then why should they bother?
I suppose "each to their own" is the answer

I dont like the sound of RIP anyway. People dont say it in real life that I've heard. Its always "Well thats sad" So its just lazy people who arent thinking about what they are posting.

R.I.P. is absolutely not disrespectful. It is a little unoriginal though, I suppose.
"He was a pisshead who wasted his chances and won't be missed" - now that's disrespectful!
Suresh
P.S. RIP Richard Burns.

I thought NSR would get more response
I'm seeing it posted alot on here with all the recent deaths. And it made me wonder if anyone was taught the same at school? Or actually understood it's true Latin wording

How strange I didn't realise I did this til now
When I see the letters RIP, I read them as "Rest In Peace" just as I read Xmas as "Christmas". I never actually say them as written
And when I read War and Peace I never "said " the names as I read them, I just "saw" them

It's on plenty of gravestones, so can't be that disrespectful.
I blame Tony Blair and his PC establishment, everyone's just looking for ways to get offended, which offends me no end!

RIP is part of the language, due to " "Rest in Peace" (or "Requiescat In Pace" to be accurate ) either not fitting on, or costing too much for the bereaved to have chiseled on."
