Go into a good size music store and try some out.
(shame I never took my own advice...lol).
Might also be worth searching out for a musician or bass forum to get some advice.

agreed. Ampeg you pay for it though.
Trace Elliott are OK, but IIRC, parts are difficult to get hold of.
Pedals wise, auto wah..... also a compressor - so many people use bass without one/ I personally won't record a bass without compression (albeit a *** sight more expensive than a pedal!!!)

ampeg, is that what flea uses ?
dont want auto wah, want to be able to control it with the movement of my foot. What did you mean when you said about "compression" ? is that an effect like any other or something slightly different, and why wont you record with out it ?
very curious now
Cheers
Ps i thought trace elliot had changed names now ? I suppose i could always get an old one second hand though.

Compression does several things - firstly, acts a bit like an automatic volume control( levels out your overall playing volume), however, as a nice addition, it also changes the sound.
It can make the sound more punchy, fat, some might say "warm" - think of compression like a cyllindrical balloon inside a box. As the balloon gets bigger, it reaches the "ceiling" of the box. It can't go any higher, so it starts to spread outwards...
This is what kinda happens to the sound
I LOVE compression!!! You can get compressors ranging in price from £50 - £3000!!! <dribble>
FX-wise, why not look at a wahwah pedal or a Korg/Ibanez/Digitech/Boss fx board?
I could recommend all of these so the best thing is to hear/try them yourself

I won't record without it, because I like the sound it makes PowerJunkie might have a different opinion (different engineers/producers have different preferences)

If you're going to play bass go for the most powerful amp/ speaker combination you can afford/accommodate in your living space. Bass frequencies take an enormous amount of power and amplifier headroom to reproduce cleanly, simply because of the amount of air the speakers have to shove about.A graphic eq and compression is a must.
Having said that, I like the bass sound of Jean-Jacques Burnel of the Stranglers, and he played through an old valve amp and a fcuked multi-speaker cab to get his sound.

Makes sense ! this is exactly the problem i have, i want a clean sound as im finding that some of the notes im playing are getting lost through fuzzyness, therefore, im hittin the strings harder, and tryin to force the sound out, which is a right ***.
Right, so it sounds like i definatly need some compression because the volume of the bottom and top strings varys greatly. Also gonna go with a wah wah pedal, an a ampeg cab and head...hmmm, better get saving methinks.
How much influence does the actual guitar have, does the sound vary widely, or is it more the feel of the thing.
And what about strings, do these vary greatly, do the different types vary the sound much ?

I personally prefer Warwick stuff (just coz I like the sound!)
Strings-wise, it the same. I'm not a big string expert, but I do like RotoSounds (including the plastic-coated ones)...
Each to their own

Original Orange 4x12 cab changed to 4x10 with an original PA120 amp (Gibson wanted to buy it off me when i asked for material to recover it), Mesa valve's along with a Wal. Did me fine till i lost the time to play. Along with a Sansamp tech21 and Korg FX unit. Also used a Peterson 12" combo which was nice for playing in the house. Very tight and bags of depth as you'd expect for an E.V speaker.
