First of all, this is not for me (I'm happily married)...

I'm looking for a Christmas present for my sister, and am considering getting her a subscription to a dating agency...if I can find a good one?

She's a medical secretary, aged 33, based in the north-west, *very* good looking (kind of Nicole Kidman look alike) and in excellent shape, but since coming out of a longterm relation about 18 months ago hasn't really found anyone new, and her group of friends seem to be a group of born-again spinsters for life.

So, any recommendations? Has anyone here met their lifelong partner via a dating agency?

My m8 (not me honest) was fleeced by one of these expensive dating agiencies.

£500.00 for 5 dates, personal matching (no computer etc etc)

After the second date (about 6 months in) the dating agency goes into liquidation - no more dates.

Shortly after he's contacted by another dating agiency offering similar services!

Are you talking about real world based dating agencies or online dating sites?

Lavalife and Lifemates are rather good for online services. Match is ok, but they were recently found to be using "date bait", so that's not a good thing. I'd stay away from the Hotmail or Yahoo date sites too.

Buy her a years membership to a busy gym, one with all the facilities (gym/pool/squash & tennis courts/bar etc) bound to meet someone there.....though I can see it on Xmas day...."are you saying I am fat!" you can't win.

If she's as good looking as you say, then she won't neccessarily need a dating agency to find a fella, and as said above may be offended. Do you know if she's had any podger recently?....she may just be happy playing the singles game, I hear there are plenty of girls that do, and don't want to get tied down.

However, if you've been economical with the truth, and she has a face made for radio, sign her up for a year

Thanks for all the replies. In terms of online or real-world agencies, well either, I’m just looking for something reputable and safe which isn’t a rip-off.

I’ve already told half-jokingly that I was going to get her a dating agency subscription for Christmas – it wasn’t going to be something I’d spring on her. Her reaction was one of slight feigned indignation…I know my sister and she won’t be offended.

She’s already a member of a gym where she’s had a few guys ask her out, but no one she is really interested in or led to anything. Same at work with some of the doctors. I know she’s up for finding someone new as we’ve chatted about my friends, but they’re either attached or not the sort of guys I’d want within 10 feet of her. She’s also tried to get her mates to do things like speed-dating, but they’re too timid for it. The dating agency thing was just an idea I had to cast the net a bit wider.

Sorry, but I can’t post photos of her or stats, that would really **** her off if she found out! You’ll just have to take my word for it that she is pretty – my mates are all surprised she’s still single, and have kindly offered to “sort her out” on numerous occasions

Maybe if you bought her a years Gym membership then she might not realise what your thinking off ..just hope she doesnt take that the wrong way though. That would probably be more successful than an agency where people paint their own pictures of how they want to be and not ness how they are ..just a thought
