Redundacy minimum notice period
Just a quick one..
My boss was made redundant today, out of the blue, 15 minutes notice...
as you can guess he was rather surprised!!
now effectivly i have no boss, or a director over him to report to,
the reason given was organisational changes..
question is, how much notice do they have to give you? i have my last day tommorrow, then i,m going into hospital.
the funny thing is we only took on a new bloke last monday, now as you can appreciate, he and i are both a bit concerned...
what do you reckon update the cv and send it out, or hang fire??
M

Depends on whats in your contract.
Currently mine is 2 weeks notice, but even if its 3 months, they can tell you and put you on "gardening leave" for the entire period of notice. The first company did that to me, called in to the office at 9, out of the office by 9:30, sat at home for the month looking for work, waiting for the pay cheque and p45 to come through.

Check your contract. My notice period was a month - I didn't have to work it and got 'gardening leave' instead and found / started a new job after one week Am still there albeit a different team now. I could get quite used to having 2 pay cheques!!!!!!!!!!!

As above, depends on your contract. When I started a new job last year within a month my immediate manager quit because she said she couldn't cope with the stress, then the IT director left the company "by mutual agreement". I then got given my bosses job and then my new immediate manager was made redundant (along with 5 other managers). Oh, and 2 of the people on my team were fired for very minor things. This was all in the space of 3 months
I've been working there for 12 months now and am beginning to feel a bit more stable (but not much!). Got my annual review this week...

Still unclear...
the guys came back to get there things today,, wouldnt say much,
we have a temporary boss we now report into ( another manager) but even he, dosent know whats going on, it looks like there may be some more going at the next level down... eek
i have indicated i need to go through some issues with our new boss, as there are some conflict of intrest issues that need to be noted to prevent future issues ( different disciplines being run by one guy)
personell couldnt shed or wouldnt shed any more light, apart to say they would keep me informed (as i,m going for an op tommorow double eek)
going to be an interesting couple of days!!

It's quite often that senior management are asked to leave on the day that they find out about the redundancy as they often have access to sensitive information.
I am sure you will find out whats happened in a couple of days. They don't just make somebody redundant for no reason. He has either done something really wrong and it's an excuse to get him out, or it's been on the cards for a while.

Very common now for anyone to be put on "gardening leave" as they put it. It solves teh problem of malisious / spitefull employees. The first job I was made redundant from I was, mind you I did maintain the DB and could have revalued the stock, the second I was back sales office staff, and didn't have the authority to sneeze let alone screw the system, yet still I was put on gardening leave.
