Who says kids today are thick?
* 36% of eight to 14-year-olds did not know the main ingredient of chips was potato.
* Nearly one in 10 of the children questioned for the BHF survey thought chips were made of oil, while others suggested eggs, apples and flour.
*More than a third (37%) did not know cheese was mostly made of milk.
Another fantastic success story for the current standards of education in this country. Ruth Kelly can be proud of her department.
Makes you wonder about the parents of these kids as well. How negligent regarding their childrens' health and education must they be.

LOL. Actually I'm not convinced there is actually any potato in the cocktail of chemicals and enhancers that make up 'fries' these days.

We took an extra teenaged lad (16) with us on holiday to France this year, and both the lads' girlfriends stayed for a week too.
I was FAIRLY surprised to find that none but my lad knew the difference between a nectarine and a peach.........but really shocked when blackberries were ripe and NONE except mine had ever tasted one!

Our trainee at work is a nice lad, we are however convinced he was beamed down around 2001 as he has no knowledge of history prior to then, doesnt know who Led Zep, Pink Floyd or the Beach Boys are/were, didnt know that the Italian Job made in 2003 was not the original.

PS there was another survey a while ago where a significant number of children thought that their milk cam from a carton, not a cow!

How old is the lad??
I have heard of all of them, I think that when I was about 7-8yrs old I had a Beach Boys T-Shirt, but I couldnt pick any of them if you put up pics. I'm 22.
I am a huge fan of the original Italian Job.
Cheers,

buck, yes it's risible BUT the stupid and the ignorant have always been with us. as has [some] bad education and [some] bad parenting. if you compared over time, my guess would be that these figures would be little different from say 30 years ago. there were some real morons at my school (probably now councillors, civil servants, politicians and journalists heh heh) but most of us were pretty bright.
i'd say perceptions are a little slewed today because a 24/7 media has to find something to fill pages and airtime. and it's usually something shock-horror gloomy with an exaggerated spin because that's how the media works, bless their sensationalist and tawdry little hearts.
nearly 1 in 10 children may have been cringingly thick in their response but the normality is that more than 90% sensibly knew that chips are made of potato and not fairy dust.
ruth kelly is a man. discuss.
