Default Banking Cheques, I'm a silly billy!...

I've been doing some work for a company as a sideline for the past six months or so and they've been paying me by cheque each week.

Because I'm lazy I've banked maybe half of these cheques, and yesterday decided to bank the lot due to my bank balance becoming rather low. However, I cant find most of the cheques!!!

I'm pretty certain I've threw them out in the rubbish in a clear-out a few weeks ago.

What can I do? Shall I phone the company, explain the situation, hopefully they can check which cheques have been banked and cancel the rest, then resend them? How much is it to cancel a cheque? Is there a time limit that a cheque can be banked?

Taught me a lesson thats for sure.

I would let the company know asap as somene may find them, alter them and cash/bank them.

I think it costs around £ 10.00-12.00 to stop a cheque. I would offer to pay it for the company if it was moi!

unless it was a bank that you were doing the work for. then they can cancel the chq's for nothing and resend straight away.

Used to be. No longer true, apparently. I got HSBC to check for my lad when he forgot to bank a Christmas cheque from his Auntie. It's nearer 5 years now.

Dont think the banks know what they are doing then mate! Had a cheque from Soverign Health Care that i tried to cash last week. Was from April 05 and they told me it had expired and that I needed to get a new one. Fair play to Soverign they just reissued me one straight away
