Been twice - but a while ago. Is it any good? Depends what you're after
Was on Oahu the first time - stayed in Honalulu. Waikiki Beach seemed vastly overated.
The sedcond time I was on Maui - stayed in Lahaina on the nw coast. Great place - lots to see and do. Try getting to the summit of Haleakala for sunrise - 10,000 foot of volcano. Took a chopper trip around the island to see everything.
Specific questions? .....
Dave
PS: the main reason for going twice was I was wroking for a Silicon Valley company at the time and it's only a 5 hour flight from San Fran ... I also got a fiend there to book it - soooo much cheaper than direct from the UK.

There are things to see and do though - Battery Randolph if your into war stuff and Diamond head. Don't try walking to it via the beach though...got a nasty foot infection caused by walking along the rocks (still have the scar), I presumed I may have trod on a washed up jellyfish, but they don't scar (usually).
All the hotels seemed be owned by the Ohana chain. Interestingly the sister hotel we stopped in: the Outrigger Reef Lanais had a Restaurant called The Shore Bird.....where you have to cook your own food!!! Not sure if its still there, but it certainly was bit of a laugh when we first went in there and given a raw steak at the table (not being told that we had to cook it ourselves)
We took a guided daytrip to Maui on a small twin engined 8 seater plane which was a nice day out. Seemed a rather sleepy place, but worth it for the sights, and to get out the touristified Waikiki.

Yeah - Maui is much nicer. Funny, but I'd just moved to Reading when I went to Honolulu and used to frequent TGIs here - meeting place for food before beers in town and stuff. Driving through Honolulu and what did I see ..... yep ..... couldn't get away from it even in the middle of the Pacific ...
Maui has some contrasting weather. One side of the island has one of the highest rainfalls in the world (c. 400+ inches pa from memory) and about 1/2 mile away it's one of the driest ... hark back to 'O' level geography for the reasons ...
Oh, and it's one of the windsurfing hotspots of the world if that floats your boat ...

Been to Waikiki on Oahu. Wasn't paying for it so have to say it was very nice. Had surfing lessons on Waikiki beach
It's worth hiring a car and taking a look around th island. Waikiki seemed a bit unreal, better to get away from the glitz IMHO and see the rest of the island.
Most of it seemed to be a big "retail experience" if you ask me, lots to seperate the Japanese tourists (of which thee are 1000's) from their money.
Personally, given the time I'd love to visit one of the Hawaiin islands which have very active volcanos, I'd love to see rivers of lava at close hand.
