I presume you've already cut a little 'v' in centre of the nail, to relieve the pressure a little?

Dont look when they cut it off....seriously. I did- big mistake!

It never grows back either.....which is why i have an odd half nail on my left foot.
Mine was done at the quacks by the nurse- no need to go to hospital . Tied 2 rubber bands around it, then whipped it off with a scalpel. Hardly an intensive medical procedure!

Got any money? Have it done privately.

Trouble is you wait 3 months, go to appointment to find it's cancelled. Don't look while they are doing it btw.

I let mine grow out. I had one on each of my big toes. Killed at times. They're all nice now. No Dr visits needed. They did go thru a stage of being all scabby and bleeding in my socks every day tho uke:

Get a scalpel and cut the sharp corner of the nail off. Job done!

I had one, it was pulled out, later grew back fine, you'd never know the difference. Friend of mine had one ?15 yrs ago, still has the odd half-nail today. I guess it depends.

Mine was removed under local anaesthetic by a Mongolian doc (nationality, not chromosome-deficient). It was my "ring-finger" toe (? next to little one), but the syringe of anaesthetic he pumped in was 3 times the size of the toe itself! Talk about quart into a pint pot! Squirting in the numbness hurt considerably more than the extraction itself - particularly as the nurse said something funny to the doc while he was slowly squeezing the plunger, which made him go "Ho, ho, ho" and his whole body shook - including the hands holding the syringe AAAAAAAARGH

beleive me i'm well past the 'let it grow out' and 'little v in the middle' stage.

my toe is actually square now, and the nail is so deep in the toe i cant even get to it...

hacked away at it the other day which gave some temporary relief, but will prob make it worse in the long run. there was blood everywhere but i just didnt care as it hurt so much! got a small insight into what people feel like when they have to ampitate one of their own limbs!! well, sort off!

cant let it grow out as its just growing further and further into the toe...

my ex is a nurse and she said some thing about taking a bit off the side of the nail rather than the whole lot, they then apparently use acid to kill the root so it doesnt grow at the sides... would prefer that to having a wierd looking toe forever!!

would be tempted just to rip it out and have seriously considered it when it gets realy bad, but i've been told this is a big no-no as the nail root goes about a 1/4 inch into the big toe...

its really hurting now actually!! all swollen and itchty!! EWE!!!

I had these for ages as a nipper. Cutting the edge of the nail off will relieve the initial pain but will return as the nail grows. I would recommend that you soak your foot in hot water with a bit of dettol or salt in as a dissinfectant. Then trim the edge of the nail but not too severely. What you now need to do is push a good amount of cotton wool down the side of your nail which will push the skin away from the nail to stop it cutting into the skin. You will need to do this on a daily basis removing the old wool and replacing it with new. You will notice it getting better after about a week but what you need to do is let the nail grow as it wants to by which time the skin will have gotten used to being away from the nail. When the infection has cleared up you should be able to stop the packing process with the wool.

Try having an epidural
I had an epidural before surgery to repair a broken femur - nothing to it. I was awake towards the end and could hear the surgeon whacking the nail into my leg.

Were you sitting still with a back like 'an angry cat' hugging a pillow with contractions coming fast and furious whilst sucking on gas and air?

I hate to be crude but I forgot to mention the bit about sitting still during that WHILST amniotic fluid spewing everywhere?

Just rip the damn nail off and be done with it!! Ya wimp!

I didn't say I wanted to see minging toes... I just think the thread would benefit from a rancid photo or two!

Have you got any rancid body parts you'd care to share?

I have given this advice before, but i don't mind again

Step 1. Drink high alcohol content beverage, enough to numb most of life's ills but not too much so you can't see straight. (weed is also good)

Step 2. Take one (fairly) clean stanley knife blade, cut away as much of the puss-ridden skin and nail embedded in said skin. Clean blade regularly as the yellowy gunge drys hard.

Step 3. Moan like a constipated badger (it will hurt even with "anesthetic" <sp>)

Step 4. When satisfied that all foreign material has been removed, wash blood from wound with water (or vodka if your fcukin hard)

Step 5. Cover dry wound with winnie the pooh plaster and hobble until healed.

Job jobbed, no need to burden the NHS or even leave the (dis)-comfort of your own house.
This isn't a joke i've done it myself loads

HTH

Get your toe removed or go private...

My mate had a serioulsy bad ingrowing toenail, so much so that the skin on his big toe completely covered the nail, very manky etc.... He waited something like 6mths on the NHS for a hospital appoitment where they completely removed the nail and ( supposedly ) killed the roots..

That was 12mths ago and yep you guessed it, the nail has grown back and it's all manky again....

Think once you've had one your toe is never quite right again..
