Default VAT refunds

Anyone know the deal with claiming back VAT on things that you buy for work?

Depends what you mean by "work" - if you're self employed you need to be VAT registered to claim it back - and of course charge VAT on anything that you sell. If you're an employee then surely your employer will refund you the full amount you paid.

Although in the latter case even if your employer won't reimburse you can claim back the income tax via your SA return. But not the VAT if you're not VAT-registered.
