Question real value of 6yrs No claims Bonus?

I have been working abroard for the last 2 years, sold my car coming up for 2 years ago, just found out that my insurance company will honour my 6 years no claims till the end of September, didn't realise they would do this for so long after I stopped the policy!

So have been desparately searching for a banger to insure, never realised it would be so difficult to find one! sods law states that I can't find any that are not stupidly priced

I am 25 with no claims and convictions, am I doing the right thing? I don't really need a car at the moment and am unsure as what will work out financially the best

What do you think? Buy a banger and insure it or let it lapse?

hey mate

depends on what will your no-claims discount go down to? and if you could use an old banger to drive round in i personally would just to make sure i kept them. As i say depends on what will happen to the discount and will you use the old banger!?!?

As far as I can work out you loose the lot! It is going to be very hard to find a cheap car and sort it out before Friday but I will do it if its worth it!

Local car auction.
I've bought plenty of runners in the past and £50 will get you a fine car.
If no MoT or tax, just declare SORN and keep it off road.

hadn't thought of that, was looking for cars with an MOT but suppose you don't need that for insurance as long as its off the road

Thanks

Yep.

As I said, I've bought plenty of runners which had a decent MoT and sometimes even a few months tax for £50...given you can get a refund on the car tax, then if it's got 3 months tax, you're getting the car for free!!!

it's about 60 - 75% that much NCB.

I have 5 years and the best insurance quote I've gotten on my Legacy B4 is £1050, so that NCB is worth about £2000 to me.

Definately worth it, you can probably transfer the NCB onto a ****ty little moped that will cost about a fiver to insure and you can store it in the attic (though that will confuse the hell out of them when they ask where it's kept!)

Certainly worth keeping that NCB going, hope you can finf something cheap enough in time, something must turn up surely.

Dont buy a moped instead of a car ! - if you change from car to bike insurance, you'll lose it ! I've got 9 years ncb on bikes, but none of the insurance companies would take this into account when insuring my first car, so technically I have 0 ncb.

As others suggest, get any old 5hitter from a breakers - they normally have a range of cars with MOT for under £200 - buy a tarpaulin as well, as if you 're going to park it anywhere near your house you'll want to keep it covered up in case someone thinks you bought it cos thats all you could afford ;0)

If you will have a car abroad then its likley they will honour you NCB when you come back. I know when I moved to Germany they were happy to allow me to use my UK NCD.

What about the old trick of insuring a car, then cancelling the policy within the 14-day "cooling off period"? They're obliged to give you a full refund unless you've made a claim in that time, and they should give you a new proof of NCB too!

You do of course need to have a suitable car to insure, but could probably "borrow" a family member's and just tell the insurance co it's registered to your mum or whoever.

Nope bike NCB can't be used for a car and vice-versa. Some insurance companies will take into account your car NCB for your bike policy, but it's just another way of assessing your risk and doesn't equate to actual bike NCB.

When I was looking at a small car in addition to the scoob, the difference between 0 NCB (after letting policy lapse cos I was driving on his insurance) and the 6 years I had was something like £400 and that was on a then 8 year old automatic Corolla!!!!!!!! I found someone who would take a 3 year break in policy and I scraped in literally with 7 days to spare!

right been out on a mission!

so far the top of the list is a L reg Granada Ghia for 300 quid 2 owners, 10 months MOT

Went to look at a 205 gt sounded great in the advert 70 odd thousand miles new cam belt 12 months MOT 6 months tax but it was shagged! rust everywhere engine bay sprayed with oil, CV joint gone no clutch left, etc - proper wasted journey

tomorrow is my last day to look really before I go with the Granada (really want a 70's one in brown but beggers can't be choosers!)

if anyone wants to have a look at www.gumtree.com then there are loads of motors sub 500 quid (even a legacy!) reccomend me one!

Thanks all

Andy

A friend of mine emigrated to Canada and none of the insurers there would accept UK NCD, so check this if going down this route.

As for the cars mentioned above, the granada and the ****ty pug. Who cares! Get the pug for 50 quid and so long as you make it home you'll be fine, it's not like you're ever going to drive the bloody thing.

Leave it in a state that makes it impossible to nick (eg. cylinder head missing) and then scrap it when you're ready to insure a proper car again.
