Default Old Movies

Anyone else a fan? I love old films - Rebecca, Brief Encounter etc. I'm just watching A Matter of Life and Death on C4 - they really don't make them like this anymore!

Casablanca, North by Northwest, Charade, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Key Largo, most other Bogart films, actually most other Cary Grant films, most Hitchcock films...

Jane Eyre, with Orson Welles as Rochester -- effing brilliant.

Dialogue from this was extensively sampled for William Orbit / Bassomatic's "Wicked Love" too

Big Sleep, Roaring Twenties, love 'em.

Out of interest, why did you use the word 'movies' in the thread title and 'films' in the content?

Thanks for the heads up DBW, just watched it 40ft high on our projector.

What it reminded me was what innovators Powell and Pressburger were. The conventions they established are being ripped by film makers today- see 'Sin City' for a recent one. So vibrant, so godamn red, just like all their films......

There are some real classic old films. They have an atmosphere about them which newer films just cant reproduce.

Stuff like 'The Dambusters', 'Ice Cold in Alice', 'Guns of Navorone'

'movies' is a term you associate with the old classics. They are movies of a bygone era. Go to the cinemaplex these days, you call them 'remakes' or maybe even 'cr@p remakes that will never be as good as the original'

I realise now that those hours spent in the company of my grandmother on weekends watching old films were very special. Its only when I watch films now that I realise I have seen far better when younger, and the fact that being at work during the day I miss lots of great old films on the box.

I've got too many films that I like to list here, but if pushed, I'd add 'His Girl Friday' to the list of great old films.

Any of the early 50,s / 60.s sci fi movies,

"This island earth, forbidden planet, them etc,

the colours/ film stock they used made such visual statements, they held you entralled..

apart from the odd gem these days, we are moving into a bang per buck, punch per person and actionfest type regime.

dont get me wrong, there have been some good ideas, but i can count on one hand the original films that had sequels as good.

Is it possibly because they didnt have the budget/ special effects that they had to make the plots / screenplay rivetting...

the rule of thumb i use these days is...

does the film have a score or a soundtrack.... if a sound track is it by a load of pop groups... if so its a 90 minute mind number ...

bond films however to a point seem to scrape through, although some of the later efforts ahve been drifting a bit..

goldfinger frwt daf classic films
