Thats alot of cash, too some familys though a dog is like a child. And you'd pay £40k for your child back wouldnt you?
Seems excessive though. the poor dog is 15years old and ready for popping its clogs anyhow but you can understand why some people would.

Lets flip the morality on this one....
If your found the dog...would you claim and take the £45K???
I know I wouldn't - I couldn't live with the awkwardness of taking somebones life savings to return a pet that was already theirs in the first place.
But I'm sure there are plenty in this country who would happily take the money and run (scum imo )

I would do everything possible to recover my dog if he went missing, but I would certainly stop way short of offering that sort of money as a reward. Dave is right that a dog becomes part of the family but it is also very important not to lose sight of the fact that it is "a dog", something that this woman appears to have forgotten, the fact that it is so old that it will probably die a couple of hours after she's handed over the money makes it even more excessive, IMO. My dog can even stick to walls but I still wouldn't offer that sort of dosh as a reward.

"one in four of those questioned said they never let their dogs off their leads for fear of it being snatched."
That's nice for the poor dog then.

Must admit though, I doubt I could take that. I know Id return somebody elses dog if I could for free. Id also like to think someone would do the same for me too, think its more down to getting asmuch publicity as possible but how many tramps will be offering a stray labrador now... they'll be getting a call a day.

But this poor mutt simply escaped. Odd that he didn't come back home unless he was involved in traffic accident? This was last March so chances of him being around must be pretty slim. One assumes that they have done all the usual checks - vets, rescue homes etc. Can't think why they went for £40k as I would have thought that £5 - £10k would have been ample.
Tough as it may seem I think the couple have to move on. Get another dog and live in hope that mutt may still return some day.

Would I offer a silly amount of money to get my hound back, hmm, nope. Mabye 100 quid or something, but not 40k, that's a little ott. I love Lily and if she went missing I would search high and low for her, put posters up, etc, and as said, maybe offer a small reward, but after a month or so I would probably accept that she's not coming back, move on, and get another hound.
If I found the dog that this reward was being offered for, I'd not take it, it would not feel quite right. If they said "here, take a 1000" then I would, possibly take that, but certainly not the 45k. As others have said, there is a great element in society today that would, without any thought take the whole 45k and be smiling all the way to the local Argos for a nice new set of Elizabeth Duke jewelery and a nice new Kappa tracksuit

anyone who has had a dog for 15 years will know that he/she is a member of the family and you would do what is in your means to get him/her back.
we have a 15 year old dachshund and i'd hate to loose him and not know what happened
