My Sisters 5 year old rotty has gone a bit scatty in the last few weeks. He wont let people in the house and growling at people alot but never bitten anyone. My Sister phoned the vet and he suggested choping his nuts off. He says it will transform the dog and make him a lot more chilled but does anyone have any idea on how chilled it will make him . My sister does'nt want to turn him into a lazy non energetic dog.

Not sure (I'm no vet) there is a definitive answer. I've known some dogs that it made little difference to and others basically spend all their time sleeping.

the idea behind castration for dogs is it just makes them calmer and stops alot of their boysterousness out of them, stops them fighting for "top dog" of the house etc.... also stops them being so territorial although none of this helped my previous bulldog, after the 2 weeks of sulking wondering what happened to his knackers he went just as mad as he was before..... lil git. Still love him though.

Works on some dogs doesnt work on others.

Lopping their nads off seems to be the cure all for all dog ailments at the moment and if I was being cynical I'd say vets recommend it because the resulting fees are higher than normal.

It doesn't neccessarily work and I'd be more interested in finding out why the dog has become more assertive before I'd go down this route. At five years of age its not as if he's suddenly dosing up on hormones as a result of reaching adulthood.

Two veg needs removing in first 12 months to be really effective I was told.
Get a dog trainer, ours showed us where we were going wrong and within a few weeks both dogs have shown big improvements in temper and behaviour.

Yes, i would agree with GOOner, i think to have the most effect it needs to be done before they've reached full maturity and started producing hormones, of all the dogs i've known to be done, none of them have shown any real signs of calming down or mellowing, i would strongly reccommend you to find a good dog trainer first, i mean if some barstard cut of your tackle, do you really think it would make you any calmer?

Thanks for the replys She took him to the vets today for his jabs and he bit the vets finger. The vet said he was only warning her to keep away as he just nipped her finger but he seems to be getting worse quite quickly. How many sessions do you have with a dog trainer before you notice a change in the dog as she wants to get this sorted asap before he goes for someone else. She has booked him in for mon to have the suckers off but does'nt want to have it done for nothing

Had a 12 year old Lab...same symtoms..he had the beginnings of a brain tumor.....

There is so much that can be the problem.....the dog just cant help you diagnose it.

we got a springer spaniel from a rescue home and he was a right viscious feeker
the wife told me to take him to the rspca which itried to do and they suggested dog training
thinking it was to palm me off we gave it a bash and noticed a difference after the 1st hours lesson
its definately worth a try
but then youve got a rotty! and i dont care how many people say they are ok in the right hands and all the ****e that goes with it im afraid they are more likely to turn on you than other types of dogs
get down the trainers quick

we had a 2 year old rotty with similar issues, he was "sorted" and it chilled him out no end, still loved walking and running around, I guess it depends on the dog though as my parents had their lab done, and she got fat and lazy.

We were told its different for different dogs, sometimes it helps sometimes it dosent.

not much help im afraid, if it were me I would get him done, we are having our rotty done at 12 months (the ideal age to have him done)

I had a vasectomy, I am much less boisterous now, the gate can be left open and I wont wander, I dont chase cars and dont jizz all other the place or **** soft toys.
