Question How early do you need to get to the ferry port before sailing?..

Im booked on a ferry for 6am at Dover tomorrow (off on a roadtrip round Europe ) - but Im not really sure what time I should get to Dover?

Do you need to be there an hour before the crossing for ferries, or can you just turn up 30mins before and get passports checked??

Yeah, we came rocking in with less than 30 mins to go and despite the evil look from the lady at the barrier, we got on fine.

Problems on the M25, and despite my catch-up attempts afterwards (my wife gave me a bollocking for exceeding 120 a few too many times) we still cut it fine.

I miss my Cally Turbo sometimes....

Used to be 30 minutes but recently increased to an hour. Mianly due to security checks. You may be lucky and not get searched, but its not unknown for the entire car to be unpacked on your way out!

Well unpacking our cars wont take long - going in a Lotus Elise which can fit about 1 bag in the boot, and a TVR Chimaera which is carrying the rest of the stuff, but that doesnt have much room in the boot either as you have to allow for the roof panel!!

Think we'll get there an hour before sailing just incase!

Might depend who you're sailing with. Speedferries wanted us there 30 minutes before the sailing time when we went to France this June. And then sailed 1 hour late

John.

In the Summer most companies said 30 minutes. Policy changed after London bombings. I suspect it won't be long before its back at 30 minutes. Theres not a lot to do at the ferry port when you get there early!

Put it this way - if you have to do a Smokey & the Bandit jump from the jetty to the ferry, you're slightly too late
