Not necessarily, but you may want to find out why the original buyer has dropped out (assuming it wasn't a multi item sale but not listed as such).

The fact that he has put "do not reply to this email" in capitals certainly suggests he isn't the seller.

If the message come from the genuine sellers account then it might have been hacked and the con man wouldn't want you replying to it because the chances are the account holder will pick it up when they next log into eBay, hence the other email address given, away from the eyes of the account holder.

Hackers don't bother to change the password if they get in to an eBay account because it would arouse suspicion too quickly. They prefer to go in and out of the account when they like.

They even list items in some accounts hoping the seller doesn't notice amongst his/her own pages of listings but direct the winner to another email address to accept payment.

Reply to the message, not the email address, and see what comes of it.

I used the link to login then realized that it could be a scam so logged direct to change my password so I assumume my account should be safe now as the password confirmation came to the right e-mail address

Same thing has happened to me twice in 2 weeks. Its hard to tell what is a genuine second chance offer or not.Its even got me thinking people put up false ads just to do this.

What i did was email the person who sent the second chance bid asking why it was a different username to in the original ad.He said he it was his partner and he was now dealing with it.I asked his partners name (i knew it from the original item when she replied to my questions).Never heard anything since.....obvious scam.

I also contacted the winner to ask why they never bought it.For some reason they wont reply.

This is ruining ebay in my opinion.I'm so reluctant to buy anything over Ł50 now and will NEVER pay for anything first.COD or nothing.

Shame really cos most people are pretty decent.

But why is it a different ebay user to the original seller?

As more info has come to light this looks like a scam to me. Originally I thought it could possibly have been a valid second chance post, but it is looking like somebody is trying to spoof the original seller's identity to initiate a scam.

Its a scam

Report it to ebay

There is another one doing the rounds too stating "Where is my package"

Quote off F-Secure AV

Almost half of the phishing messages we see currently are targeting eBay. However, we've lately seen a new technique used to lure eBay users to divulge their account password.

Instead of sending a fake message from eBay administrators, this message claims to be from a fellow eBay user, complaining: "I sent you the money , where's the package ? You promised that after i send the money you send the goods asap . is this a fraud?"

Paul, It's common. People watch auctions and then contact the bidders (you can see their usernames from the bidding list). They then contact them about the sale and pretend to offer them another chance hoping that they will just part with the money first.

Some sellers list their auctions and keep the bidders list private to prevent this.

It's a simple as HELP -CONTACT US - CHOOSE CATEGORY. Then wait for a response.

Or phone if you are a gold or above Powerseller.

I've heard they do as much as some people say they don't. Personally I'm not a "report" person but I know a fair few who do on eBay and they do appear to get action on occassions.

I haven't even used the phone support because I'd rather deal with things myself than listen to an untrained monkey spouting elementary shíte.

I'm sure the Police wouldn't be in the slightest bit interested as no actual crime has been committed until they have received the money. Anybody could say it was sent to the wrong person by mistake.
