Scoobateers,
I've been involved in a scam with some chap from West Africa that wanted to buy my motorbike. He made up some fishy story about how he can pay the money but would like his friend from China who is in this country to pay me MORE than my bike was worth and have me pay him back the balance.
I have spoken to the Fraud Squad @ Met police who told me he would sent me a foriegn cheque which when cashed can take upto 6 MONTHS to clear by which time he gets my honest dosh and the cheque will bounce hence leaving me £££ down.
Anyway to cut a longer story short I recieved his cheque today... but it in UK currency!!!
I traced the company who appeared on the cheque and gave them a call. They informed my that someone stole a page from their cheque book and are using copies of the same numbered cheque all over the show to buy houses, car, go-karts etc etc and scam us Brits out of our hard earned dosh. I attach the fake cheque for your perusal:
BE AWARE!

Maybe not such a good idea showing the account number on the cheque but good job you never fell for it.
Can't trust no one these days, although anyone who says he'll pay me more and I am to repay him at a later date I would be very wary of.

Exclamation

'Cash is king' as they say, don't hand the goods until you've received proper payment in any transaction where you can't afford to lose the money.

lol....at last reading this thread has shed some light on why i've had something in the region of 20 emails from africans offering to buy my wifes car (which is advertised in the autotrader) all with the same story of a "paying with friends chq" that is more than the amount of the sale price of the car. Gotta say though that the spelling and tone of the emails has been making me laugh no-end so i hope they dont stop trying this scam for a while, its good for a laugh telling them to p155 off with their dodgy scams.

Glad to be of service. Oh, BTW, he sent me another e-mail this morning:

"Hello frank,

Why you don't mail me since all this days l believe you have received the check and clear the money from the bank .....Why you refuse to send the balance ....l want you to send the money now before 24hrs .....

Thanks......"

....or else he'll come round and beat me up?...
I was smart enough to give the guy my works address when I originally decided to go along with the payment so he doesn't know where I really live.

My m8s in work reckon a couple of 4x4's driven by Nigerian's with machine guns might turn up outside of my workplace next ... hehe

Tell him that your new work address is
Wellington House,
67-73 Buckingham Gate,
London,
SW1E 6BE

and to wait in reception to collect the balance.
Then ring 020 7230 1212 (Specialist Crime OCU Fraud Squad) and let them know they have a visitor in reception

Can someone tell me what is wrong with posting sort codes and account numbers?

they arent like credit card numbers, you can't withdraw using them, only deposit, so whats the problem?

someone show me what I am missing.

You can set up direct debits with an account number and sort code so maybe you can get other services with it too.

If I knew he was personally collecting the cheque then I would but he wants the money sent via mail.

One of the contractors in work comes from Nigeria. He says he can write me a reply in his language/dialect to the words of... "go scr3w yourself and some other complementing stuff" and he reckons that would really freak him out!
