94% of motorists break the speed limit!
The other 6% lie like cheap Korean watch!
I like the sats from the DOT at the end: 1 in 3 deaths caused by speeding. Really? What are the other two caused by then? People not looking out for hazzards as they were to busy watching for speed cameras!?

LONDON (Reuters) - Ninety-four percent of motorists admit to breaking the speed limit, while almost a quarter do so because they think the limit is too low, according to a survey published on Friday.
A third of young drivers aged 18 to 29 said they regularly broke the speed limit, while almost 60 percent of drivers think it is acceptable to speed on empty roads, the survey by Direct Line found.
The Department of Transport estimates that one in three road deaths are caused by speeding. The survey found that motorists thought it was acceptable to speed when there was an emergency (33 percent), if the limit was considered to be too low (24 percent) or if there was less traffic about (21 percent).

Just a bit tired of reading threads stating 50% this and 95% that.
Nothing personal.

I have to admit I often groan at these threads, but I can't help but read them.
I also try to remember that 87.333% of statistics are made up.

While statistics are often nothing but random numbers these figures do support what most of us imagine, or how most of us behave. Ask anyone in the street how many drivers break the speed limit and what will their observations tell you? So, in this case where the statistics seem well supported by real life I would suggest that there is a reasonable chance of this being accurate and, as New Scooby points out, probably under reported. Is there anyone in the UK who doesn't exceed the speed limit occasionally? The important figure, of course, isn't the number on the pole but the speed at which it is safe to drive and in view of our excellent safety record here in the UK it would seem that most people rarely exceed this speed.
In terms of the one third lie, well the ABD recently got some figures under the FoI act relating to crashes on the section of the M4 that has recently got speed cameras. These show that excess speed (this includes excess speed for the conditions as well as speed above the limit) was ranked by Wiltshire police as a definite cause of only one accident between 1999 and 2004. In stastical terms this is less than 1% of the accidents reported.

Problem is the press only report the spin released by the camera partnerships PR companies and then report as if it is gospel rather than questioning the reports.
we see exposes on TV about how police break guidlines and rules when investigating various offences but never checking on camera vans and there locations or if Traffic cops using laser guns are hiding in bushes as rumoured. about time BBC did some thing for the Licence payers rather than more of this Police Stop rubbish using fleeing criminals as justification for more speed camera's

If 94% of motorists speed but only a quarter think the limits are too low, why the hell do the rest speed? I can imagine the conversation:
"Do you think the speed limit is too low?"
"No, no one should be allowed to go any faster"
"So do you break the limit?"
"Oh yes"

I suspect the answer to that might lie in the way the question is worded. I haven't seen the survey questions and so am only guessing.
However, many people were surprised to note that a very high percentage of motorists, in some government surveys, supported speed cameras while most other polls show this not to be the case. It turned out that the question asked wasn't exactly "do you support speed cameras?" but was more often something along the lines of "would you rather kill a child or have a speed camera installed?" Under these circumstances most people pick the speed camera and the administration put out another press release saying "97% of motorists support speed cameras." In one recent survey i saw there was no "none of the above" option and so 100% of people responding appeared to be in support.
