Default Sci-Fi Books

I’m after some recommendations for sci-fi books.

I’ve most of the Sci-Fi masterworks series and most if not all of the books by:

Iain M Banks

Asimov

Greg Bear

Peter F Hamilton

Alastair Reynolds

Dan Simmons

Michael Marshall Smith

Vernor Vinge

China Mieville.

Any other authors you’d recommend?

sounds daft but I really enjoyed the John Carter of Mars Series by Edgar Rice Burroughs of Tarzan Fame - sorry but I did - wrriten so long ago I found they had a certain charm and naievity. Don`t overlook some of the classics ( yes I am a sad old git! ) Day of the Triffids is a good example.

Day of the Triffids is great, I read a collection of John Wyndham stories a couple of months back and most of them were pretty good, I especially liked The Chrysalids.

Re Vernor Vinge..

Have you read "Fire upon the Deep"? I think he also wrote the "Marooned in Realtime" and an other Realtime one which I can't remember...

Also recomend "The war against the Chtorr" series by David Gerrold. However, this is an unfinished series and mostly out of print, but the remaining books are in writing..

Ben Bova, very good. Moonrise and Moonwar are good places to start. He is also working his way through the planets of our solar system, all of which I enjoyed.

Kevin J Anderson and his Saga of the Seven Suns series is also good, the first book is Forest of Stars.

I've enjoyed all of Richard Morgan's books so far - Altered Carbon is probably the best one to start with though.

Philip K Dick has written some great books. Films based on his books include The Truman Show, Bladerunner, Minority Report, there's loads that haven't been hollywoodised yet though!

I second that, though I prefer Niven's earlier works (The Mote in Gods Eye, Footfall, Lucifer Hammer, The Legacy of Herot).

Also recomend Stephan Baxter. Hard Science Fiction at it's best.

Roughly in decreasing order of talent:

Ursula LeGuin
Robert Silverberg (but get stuff published between 1969 and about 2001)
Orson Scott Card
Sherri S Tepper
Greg Egan
Paul J MacAuley
Ian McDonald
Elizabeth Moon
David Brin

I'll try to think of more later.
