tbh, I wouldn't have thought that a career in IT would be the most suitable way forward for someone whose computer skills are "very limited". The IT industry is over subscribed as it is, so unless you have something unusual to offer, you haven't got great prospects - unless telephone support appeals to you (i.e. working in a call centre )

18 years so mid to late 30's depending on education. I'd forget it mate, unless you fancy earning peanuts. Too many people like yourself think it's an easy way to make money, even guys I know who are very capable programmers are struggling with contract rates and salaries.

Well you have 18 years of valuable experience in your field. You would be a major asset in the H&S industry and with construction being very H&S concious, you have to say that you stand a superb chance of developing well in that field.
Not just the HSE deal in H&S almost all companies have H&S officers and its a career thats still in the ascendancy (pardon the pun). Have a look and do some research, i'm sure it would appeal and afterall you have almost 20 years of knowing all the little tricks people pull to try and evade their H&S duties

As has been mentioned IT isn't a bed of roses. You need to decide which area you want to focus on, design, development, implementation, infrastructure DBA etc etc and then get qualified. Depending on area that could be a degree or a shed load of MSDE type qualifications. Then you join the rat race. If you want more than that, you're looking at needing good experience and / or a Masters degree. Personally I think you may do better specialising or moving sideways in an area you already have experience in. Your HSE suggestion kind of fits that bill.

must admit i think ive left it to late to go into the world of IT. and the HSE would be more realistic . actually considered doing the nebosh diploma 6 years ago . just been on the hse site and it looks like they take on trainee inspectors .
