Who's got Google Earth?
Type into the search, "Guymon, OK" and it should take you to a section right in the middle of the USofA.
All around the town are fields which look like they have different coloured circles in. If you zoom out, there are hundreds of them!
Anyone know what they are? It's driving me mad!
TIA
Clare

I found the pyramids yesterday actually!
You can only see detailed street level maps if they've photographed to that depth. E.g. I can see my house in great detail, but where I used to live is not. The US has a real high level of detail in most places, even 3D - you must have seen the Grand Canyon!
Unfortunately the Pyramids are not 3D. The Himalayas are tho!

I looked at this Guymon place on World Wind, similar to Google, and the round things are almost certainly field irrigation systems. Water is "spread" onto the fields by a long pipe thing which pivots around a central point and so it produces a round pattern in the field.

OK, makes sense. There are absolutely loads of them though, all different colours! The whole of Kansas is covered in them! Must take alot of water to keep those crops wet!

Wow, just downloaded this, looks pretty good. Although everywhere that I have looked at so far was not in great detail
How do you find the famous places so that you can look at them in 3D - my geography is pants.

There are some preprogrammed into Earth - the Grand Canyon is amazing. If geography isn't your strong point, them you may be in trouble
Have you tried putting place names into the search box?

Google appears to use the Landsat 7 images for much of the world and I believe that this gives a resolution of about 15 meters per pixel. However, there do appear to be areas with a much higher resolution than this so I guess that other image databases are also in use. Even so to be able to see the world to a 15m resolution is still pretty impressive. World Wind has all the terrain info and so you can tilt into the image and see elevation. This is great when planning trips into remote areas as you can get some idea of the ground and seeing it in 3D gives you more of a feel than the map with contour lines.

Is World Wind free like Google Earth? I have had it on the laptop since last week and I'm fascinated!

You have to learn your geography from somewhere....now is a good time to start
At least I managed to find America, and not Africa....I used to get those mixed up when I was young

World Wind is free but is a significant download at about 180Meg for the full install. It is certainly worth the download, the interface is different from Google but I found it worked without reading any help etc.

Give it a go and see what you think.

Hedgehog, the only reason I would change would be if they have the Nurburgring in high res. Google doesn't, so it's a tad annoying. Can you check for me? If you search on Adenau, Germany, see if it's in detail please?
