Tom Tom Go

Tom Tom Go
having sold my pioneer stuff I am looking at the tom tom go hardware options.
Can someone explain to me the difference between the 500 and the 700.
I know one comes with detailed maps of europe and a remote control but aside from that I am a little unsure of how one is better than the other.
The 700 has a 4 gig hard disk, the 500 uses SD cards to enter the maps. What does this mean in terms of functionality?
I would also like to know how I can enter a map of the us and take the unit away with me. is this possible?
and finally, are these fixable as I find that li-ion batteries tend to go after a few years and don't want to have to chuck it away when that happens.
thanks in advance.

700 has street level maps of Europe, 500 only has MAJOR roads.

Battery is internal probably have to send it back to tom tom.
700 has 64MB ram and 2.5GB disk, as opposed to 500 32MB Ram.
And the fact it has a remote control, those are really the only differances.

steve,
I set up an account and verified the link to allow me to view the group buy, but it the link sent out does not verify my account as it doesnt recognise the url properly.
In short I don't know the details fo the group buy.
can you let me know.
with regard to having a hard disk and a faster processor, will it make map routing and recalculation faster?

TBH I really think it more comes down to, do you need street level Europe?
I'm in Europe monthly at the moment so for me that's a big yes, which means 700 is my only real option.
If you don't think it's really needed for you I'm sure 500 will be just fine.
Group buy is only really just getting kicked off, the guy is currently finding out the prices per unit, I will let you know when there is more info.

Loads of info here...

I've just got a 500 mainly for the TT Traffic (which is great) and the Hands Free Phone.
The USA maps won't fit on the 700 as well as the Europe ones. i.e. you'll need to delete some of Europe first.
One of the threads on there said the battery is a standard cell and you can change it yourself, but you'll need to resolder the wires.
Cheers.
Steve.

sounds like the hard disk isn't much good if you need to delete maps of europe to cover the US (I suppose it is quite a big place!). It would be ok if they left in the SD facility, but it sounds like it might be worth going for the 500.
If you buy maps for the 500 are they simply stored on a preloaded SD card or just a D rom with to enable you to write to SD?
Or can you write straight from cd rom to the SD card in the unit via usb?

Everything is on the SD card. Not sure of the size on my 500 I think its 256Mb, I'll check when I get home.
If you plug the GO into a PC via the USB it just maps the SD up as another drive, or you can use a card reader.
The USA maps are £120 and come on a 1GB SD Card.
