Caller ID (And TPS Subscription) Free from BT
Hello
If you have a compatible phone and would like Caller ID, you can now sign up for free with British Telecom. http://www.bt.com/btprivacy . They will also sign you up to TPS.
If you haven't come across the Telephone Preference Service, this will block unwanted marketing calls. If you don't want to take advantage of the BT offer above, you can sign up for it directly here: http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/

Great, signed up now
On a slightly related subject as I trawled the FAQs - anyone know how to turn off 1571 answering machine or is it a call to BT?
It's a PITA and I'm thinking of getting a proper answering machine / phone that lets you know there's a message (yup, too lazy / forgetful to pick up the phone each time we come in )

TPS is very good. I signed up a couple of years ago and now hardly ever get any annoying tossers ring me up. I still get the odd one from the US but they can't do anything about that. But it's still worth it to stop the "you're won a holiday/We are in the area...." etc

Yes, for some reason you can still pay £1.75 a month for it or sign up to this package and get caller ID free.

The ones based outside the UK are the problem, not much you can do about them.
