advice needed: getting a 2nd job.. (nights)
So.
Time's are tight, and I'm feeling the pinch.
I work full time, and as yet I can find no clause in my current contract that says I cant have a second job.
I'm thinking about getting limited night work..
The thing is; a few years ago I managed to get myself into the higher tax bracket.. and have to fill in a return every year as a matter of course now despite barely skimming the 40% bracket now (unlike a few years back).
I have never had a second job before, so what things do I need to take into account?
Obviously the tax man.
Do I need take a long a P60 to the new employer so they can get my current tax code?
Obviously I need to check with my main job that im not breaking any contact conditions (which I dont think I am)
Anything else?
Are you 'allowed' to have a second job on the books??
Ideally I want cash in hand.. but I can only seem to find legit work...
any advice is welcomed
cheers.

You are allowed a second job assuming your current employer has no conditions saying you cannot.
If your paying 40% tax then is any night work going to be worthwhile? What you thinking of doing? I imagine your thinking of something unskilled, call centre/shop work/security etc? If so then paying 40% tax on £7 an hour is high.
There was a company who do security work around here who had people as 'self employed' to avoid insurance issues but they've stopped that now but people working for them weren't usually decaring their earnings.
For cash in hand how about doing jobs for peoplel for cash related to your current job assuming thats practical.

Hi,
Yeah I know a potential hit of %40 tax is a bitch- but thats that...
cash in hand from my current job?- unfortunately my main job skills are of no use to anyone but software developers
So yes, unskilled would have to be the case I expect.
Tesco were offering decent night hours 22.5 hrs a week.. - but not aware of rate of pay.. (they dont tell you until interview time apparently)
I suppose club work??> bar staff?
Dont fancy door work, although nottingham IS probably an ideal location for that kind of thing being club central...
altho I dont think I'm big enough or bullet proof enough for that
(wonder how much stab vests are?)
thanks for the comments though..

tesco will be £5-6 an hour id expect.
Maybe casual bar work at a privately owned local would pay cash in hand? unlikely though.
What is it you do? programming? I guess it would be difficult to find extra work doing something like that.

tbh- I dont enjoy sitting on my **** in the evenings...
NOt into TV, and spend most of my time on here, or mucking about with the PC playing games/ making music etc..
never seem go to bed before 1am
JUst thought a night job would be a good way to bolster the family income and use up the idle time I have.
plus its unlikely I will ever manage a better salary than now without major upheaval (ie: working in the US or japan- and the wife and kiddy wouldnt appreciate that Im sure)
Current job is very specialist, with only a few places in the country that do it..
Ironically enough, there a few non stable local options. not really viable thought as I need the security running an entire house on my wages.
I dont mind working all hours..
done it years ago as a student..

I've done the second job many times throughout my life. You have to accept that, to keep it legal and above board, you will pay top tax and you may be jiggered because of the strange hours you have to work. If it's necessary at this particular time in you life, you can always do it. It won't be for ever and it can actually make your life, at this moment, better.

Jaydee5:
I'm not considering it a permanent fixture.. more a 6 month stop gap or so.. or until Im too tired to do both
cookstar:
hm.. maybe mate
pete: I dont have any extra licenses for truck driving..
maybe time to get a forklift license
Security stuff is perhaps an option..

On the P60 front, you only get an allowance with one employer. Your new employer will ask you for a P45. You'll have to tell them you haven't got one. Then they'll give you a P46 to fill in, which has got some stuff about being a student and some other questions. You'll probably end up giving it back to them with none of the boxes ticked, and then the IR will allocate you a BR tax code for the second job.
BR means "basic rate" which means you'll be taxed at 22% for everything you earn in the second job. If you're a higher rate taxpayer, then you'll have underpaid at the end of the year so you'll have to pay the extra when you submit your Self Assessment return. I think there's a tax code for "higher rate on everything" but I don't know what it is.
The only silver lining is that National Insurance doesn't work like Income Tax at all. You'll get another NI allowance at your second job, so you can earn up to £82 a week without paying any NI.

I used to work two jobs at the same time and honestly, unless it is cash in hand i just wouldnt bother. It genuinely is two steps forward one step back stuff.
You might think it is do-able but when you realise you are seeing c.£3.50 for every extra hour of work it just starts becoming soul destroying

carl- cheers. Useful info there, thanks.
top banana- well; I dont code- I'm a games artist! (3d work) been doing it 10 years now.. not qualified or experienced in anyhting else. and it pays ok, just not enough at the moment. If I moved sideways into graphic design then I know for a fact I cant command the same salary as know.
Jap2Scrap- hmm perhaps worth investigating... I'm not proud
Matt- tbh it's less soul destroying than knowing Im getting deeper into debt for every hour I stay at home in the evening..
