I few years ago i used to keep Bees, one day i was standing by my beehives in the middle of a field (in the middle of nowhere) wearing a white head to toe bee-suit. To my surprise I heard the BBMF approaching on a heading to pass directly over me, as they approached i gave them a big wave.
Totally amazed to see the spitfire and hurricane both start waggling their wings side to side (waving back) as they flew over.
Coolest thing i'd ever seen, and sounded awesome too. It felt like it could have been 1944 as it was just me, the field, the beehives, and 3 WW2 planes.

They do purr at reduced boost on the approach to land. Its a "one off" noise anyway.
They do have air displays at Teeside if I remember correctly, I think I did one with the Vulcan there once, or certainly in that area.
There was a bloke who fitted an aero engine in a sprint special to do the Brighton Sprint event. He used to appear every year with it. Don't know if it was a Merlin though. I think he survived it all
