The real state of Britain
- 69 per cent of households are now in receipt of at least one state benefit
- 22 per cent of the population is on income-related benefits
- 15 per cent of the population on tax credits.
- 30 per cent of the population derive more than half their income from state support
- up to a quarter of workers are employed by the government.

Compared to what? Have these figures increased??
They're figures that can be manipulated.
Council tax reductions for people living alone count as a 'state benefit'.

I can tell you that Government spending has risen from 37.5% of GDP in 1997 to a projected 45% for 04-05. Of that spending, 30.8% is on "social protection" a NuLabour emphamism for benefits. So yes, there are big increases.

Every child is eligible for Child Support, a non means tested benefit. Therefore even very wealthy families might be included in some of those statistics.
Other statistics you could look at include there has never been more people in employment in the UK, it's at an all time high. Also the average hours worked in the UK are higher than the rest of Europe. You can slice statistics how you like to make political points.

Indeed. I'm sure the government could reduce most of those figures with their own brand of number crunching.
Today's UK seems pretty affluent with most people that want to work in a job and property prices at a silly level due to the cash in our pockets and low interest rates.
Jump back 20+ years and we were far worse off as a nation.

Tory claptrap
Two important facts: The UK has the lowest unemployment and highest growth of any major European country.
Back to the original post, the figures in The Netherlands are much, much worse. At least 75% of households receive Govt benefits. All homeowners still get MIRAS.. I for example get more than a grand a month in such state handouts. How absolutely shocking!!

P.S. Was watching the UB40 [homegrown in holland] DVD the other night, which recalled a song from the good old Tory days. Do the words "I am the one in 10" mean anything??? Cracking dvd though.

New Labour stopped the rot by switching over to ILO standards AFAIK. Am happy to be corrected of course by anyone who knows otherwise...

It won't last.
Anyway, that doesn't account for the totally degraded standards/morals, the youth yob, attitude problem we have in it's droves in sunny Britain.

"Britain"
A country robbed of it's once proud trait of respect, courtiouseness and morality.
Just a melting pot of dregs from across the globe, as well as the fact that Brits, instead of standing up for themselves have allowed themselves to be no better, sliding into what is now termed "typical arsehole brit".
