I do it every time my contract is up for renewal. Don't even say that you are thinking about going elsewhere, just go through to the contract cancellation team and say you want to cancel.
They will then ask why you are cancelling and will put you through to someone who will try and keep you with them.
Be armed with details of other service provider offers so that you can get the best deal out of them. Not only will you get a new phone you should get a much better contract with them too. I did this recently and got a D500, half price monthly charge which included 200 xnetwork free minutes and 100 texts for less than £20 a month.
I'm with 02 though, but I'm sure they'll all accomodate in the same manner.

i upgraded my phone 2 months before the end of my 12 month contract , the first girl i spoke to said it would cost me £50 so i said forget it and would cancel my cotract when it was due , she put me through to a supervisor and he sent me the phone for zip and it was with me the next day !

Same with me, it seems if they think you're going to cancel they cave in, and I should think so too - my phone bill is around £150 a month and they tried charging me for an s700i last November - as with any business they'll try and push their luck as far as possible.

The way i have always done it with O2 ( Been with them for 9 years ) is when I see a handset that i want is to phone customer services up and say I want to upgrade my handset, tell them the model, and then you get given a price or told if its free. If they try to charge I ask about price matching and everytime they match the best price I can find and i get the new hand set
If they won't do a price match ask to be put through to cancelations. If you do decide to leave you can take your number with you

I just asked for an upgrade, n got an Ericsson K700i FOC I could of had a Nokia, Samsung or Motorola, all camera/mp3 phones. They didnt even ask why I wanted an upgrade, call took less than 5 minutes. Plus I have a low cost tariff. This is T-Mobile.
Right I'm off now to sell my old T68i on eBay

I do this all the time too.
Phone up, get through to contract cancellations and say you want to leave
Normally they ask why- say you have been offered a better tariff on another network( have details of it to hand) and a free handset (again have details).
They will normally match it there and then to try and keep you on their network.

I got a stoopid question;
I'm with Orange on a pay-as-you-go basis, as i don't use the mobile a great deal, but my phone needs upgrading badly. So, assuming i can find a phone i like, do i just buy the cheapest offer i can find on ther net, and just plug in my SIM card, or do the phone shops do you deals on pay-as-you-go "contracts" that outwiegh the cost of actually buying a new phone? Anybody know? And any recommendations for a phone that has a camera and video functionality (is that 3G, or do 3Gs do other stuff besides?). Cheers.

O2 are good for this. I get whatever phone I want every 12 months FREE. (It helps that I am 02 select, cos I used to spend £500+ per month. Average bill is now £50.00, but I still get the select service )

Vodafone wouldn't upgrade mine as I don't spend enough. Average monthly bill is usually between £15 and £20. But the chap in the shop said I could convert my current phone to pay and go, then sign up for a new contract and new number. But I'm signing up for another twelve months if I upgrade anyway
Didn't take up the offer at the time as I didn't want a new number, think I may try again and threaten to cancel / move to O2 or Orange

There seem to be some amazing deals at the moment on 3 and from what I can tell you can port your old number over.
The one I'm looking at is below from dialaphone..
New LG8130 free plus £10 cashback (and a free clock !?)
18 month contract but *free* for the first 13 months then £30 pm for the remainder.
500 Anytime Xnet mins + 100 Txt
Free insurance at £5.99 pm for 3 months and canx at anytime..
Anyone got any feedback on 3 as I'm with voda at the moment as well but this seems a cracking deal ?

I noticed the amzing deals on 3 too, but I have spoken to a few people at work who use 3 and they said not to use them.
The reception is still bad/ mainly unusable, so leave it for another year.
BTW, I just signed up to Vodaphone on the stop the clock offer, might be worth talking to vodaphone about it.

the deal is done Vodafone aren't an easy push over like Orange (or even O2 it would seem ) it would seem but i couldn't be bothered to mess about swapping numbers, waiting a month to cancel etc.
got the sony K750i (i bet i get it in silver and not black ) for 25 quid, 3 month free insurance, 3 quid extras pack (texts, wap, picture messaging etc.) thrown in for free and went for the 125 minutes 'stop the clock' tariff, which in theory, if i made all my calls in the evenings or weekends for exactly an hour every time gets me 2500 x-network minutes a month all for 25 quid

I got my new black Sony Ericsson K750i delivered this morning as a free o2 online upgrade
I have called them a few times over the last few months about free upgrades & was never offered a decent phone. I was always told I would have to pay for something like a D500 so I was amazed when I was told that 'yes I could have a K750i as a free upgrade'.
I am surprised how small it is for what it can do. It is only slightly bigger than my T610.

Im suprised at how hard people have to push to get a phone. I called up and without even mentioning leaving Voda they gave me a Nokia 6230i for a fiver. I rarely spend more than my £23 line rental.
The best bit is my old Nokia 6230 went for £107 on ebay last night. Gotta be loving that.
Simon.

the 18 month bit didn't bother me too much, i was already 14 months into my existing contract as it was, the tariff suits my usage down to the ground and i've managed to knock 11 quid off my monthly bill in the process
