Question Soft tail mountain bike

It's something I swore I'd never get as a hard tail advocate (weight, complexity etc) but after a visit to Morzine last year, loads of rough stuff in the meantime, then coed-y-brenin last weekend convinced me to change my mind.

Short list is:
- Turner 5 spot
- Ellsworth Truth
- Something from Nicolai

Also had a brief scant at Santa Cruz Blur and Intense Spider. I'm looking to shorten the list rather than lengthen it so I'd be particularly interested in feedback on any of the above.

Cheers in advance.

I am a hardtail fan too but have just put a deposit on a Yeti 575 frame.

Haven't got it yet though. Still speccing the bling bling build!

Santa Cruz Blur gets great reviews and is lightweight so that would be my choice out of the above. A new longer travel version is coming out very soon too.

The Turner or Santa Cruz would be my selections, both very nice, well made bikes. I have personally seen too many failures of Ellsworths to be comfortable recemmending them and Nicolais I don't think offer good VFM.

I just upgraded from a Giant XTC4 to a Kona Kikapu Deelux, no going back now.

Its a bit like all wheel drive, it doesnt make you a better driver, but it gives you the capacity to f*ck up at a much higher speed

I know you don't want to increase the list but Specialized? Epic, Stumpjumper or Enduro depending on the type of riding you do.

I was sorely tempted by last years Enduro, though they seem to have made it a bit more extreme this year with huge travel. But then bikes seem to be getting more and more travel over the years. I guess the advent of ProPedal damping and the likes means the extra travel isn't so energy sapping.

Still my Marin Mount Vis. doesn't really see enough use at the moment to warrant a trade in for a new bike.

I took my hardtail to Coed-y-Brenin last November for a long weekend in the snow!

Was great fun. Looking forward to doing it again on the Yeti.

Bar my first bike (Muddy Fox) I've had nothing but Specialized (excellent bikes BTW) and I just fancy a change. I know the 04 Enduro scored 10 on every review I ever saw. One thing I'm not sure about on the soft tail Spesh and that's how exposed the rear shock is to the elements. Maybe it's not a problem...

Cheers
