Question what could this be

Long road near mine that bends to the left at the end and goes under a bridge. Just before the bridge is a cctv camera on a pole (half the height of a lamp post) and next to it is a lens/some sort of small circular camera and below this attached is (i saw this at night by the way) an infra-red light, which was clearly red at night.

Is this tax/speeding, anything else ?

At a guess this sounds like the thing that stops lorrys going under the bridge, should be a black sign up some where that will light up STOP when the large vehicle breaks the infra red beam

hmmm although this is a big road and all lorries use it as it connects to the m25 at the dartford crossing. The bridge is big enough for anything to go under. They used to hide mobile tax cameras on the other side of the bridge which you couldnt see until you'd gone through already. Theres an arch for each direction of traffic as its a wide old road

I saw on our local TV that Essex police were putting in ANPR cameras which tracked cars by their number plates around the county. Is it not one of those? Was the pole the new type of triangle mesh stuff?

Does it look like any of these? clicky

As it has an infrared lamp, its likely to be either an ANPR or a cctv system.

Some places have an ANPR camera monitoring the number plates and a CCTV camera viewing the road.

just checked the list and it looks like the specs one near the bottom. Altho the pic has two round things either side of the cctv, the one in my road has one. Im gonna check the other end of the road and see if theres another one working out average speed and stuff. The roads long and straight about a 0.75 mile long.

ill try and get a pic of it too

sounds more like CCTV.

ANPR normally only uses 1 IR lamp. They might use 2 as back up, ie it may not be easy to change the bulbs so when 1 lamp blows the other can be used.
CCTV can have 2 IR lamps, 1 spot light and 1 flood light. Seems a bit weird though if all it does is monitor traffic.

It may be a traffic monitoring. Hard to tell without seeing it.
