Angry New bedroom light

Just got back from 2 weeks holiday to find that the local council have seen fit to erect a street light right outside my house in front of my bedroom window (well, at the end of the front garden but you know what I mean).

Surely they have to give notice to do things like this? I tell you what, some poor council worker is going to get a reet bollocking come Monday morning and if it isn't gone by the end of the week I'm going to use the Forester to pull it down

They do have to give notice but they probably have. A notice pinned to a telegraph pole, a small 'ad' in the local rag and something on a noticeboard in the council offices.

Actually, on a serious note, where does my property end? Because the damn things in the hedge that borders my garden, not the footpath. Surely thats my land?

I had one outside my bedroom window when I used to live at home, luckily somebody kept shooting it with an air rifle from a nearby field

No need to shoot it, just boot it, hard, in the middle of the night and it'll go out.

Much more satisfying

Used to do this as a kid with mates, childish I know Never figured out why it worked though.

Your forrester should be a very very very last resort ( criminal damage ) if they don't remove the lamp.

If you look around the bottom of the streetlight there is a panel which opens ( try shorting out the light ) it isn't affecting any other neighbours but don't take out the electricity supply to your street that would drop me completly in the dog poo.

Send them an invoice for ground rent Mr Rev.

I reckon, what, £1000 a year should cover it?

Already e-mailed the street light dept of the council asking about the complaints procedure and the person to speak to, also tried to find out who my local councillors are but the council website isn't working properly

Not a problem they either pay you because of the location of the light or they remove it simple.

You need to get in touch with the highway records department at your local council, it may be on highway land as it is on the verge outside your hedge.

Oh yeah, most councils I've dealt with charge for the information and you have to supply an OS plan to them

By your description I thought it would've been Right outside your window....that has to be about 12 - 15 metres away ? get blackout blinds, get used to it , its not worth the raised blood pressure.
There are worse things in life.

Wink

Just seen the pics and TBH I dont see what the fuss is about. The light in question must at least be 30-40 foot away from you. If youre worried about sleep, as above use proper thick curtains and you wont see any light

On the plus side, at least theres some light on your drive which *may* be a deterrant to any thieves that may be about.

The only bad thing I can think of is if you wanted to widen your drive at some point in the future, assuming that horticultural mess, I mean bushes are yours.

Is this a NIMBY thing?
