Question Car Accident Repair Query

Car has an approximate value of £15,000.

Repair estimate is as follows:
Body repairs £2,171.93 + VAT = 2,552.02
Mechanical repairs £7,318.51 + VAT = 8,599.25

GRAND TOTAL £11,151.27

My query is, do the insurance inspectors assume a value of a car and will not authorise repairs if the repairs are more than 30% of the value of the vehicle.

i.e 30% of a car worth £15,000 is £4,500, but these repairs will be approximately 80% of the car's value.

I think 70/80% is a typical figure actually.

It's up the ins company in the end. They'll possibly take the view that, in addition to the cost, the hassle and ensuring a professional job is done etc. means that they might write it off.

I believe they write it off if the cost of the repairs is more than 50% of the vehicles value.

Thanks for the replies.

Fortunately I was not the driver (one of my colleagues).

Bentley Turbo R LWB (1993 model) with approx 110,000 miles on the clock, and it was hit broadside at a set of traffic lights in Canary Wharf last week.

Good old fashioned Transit van was the culprit.

Car is at Broughtons of Cheltenham (Rolls Royce/Bentley Dealership) and to say the mechanical parts are expensive is an understatement.

The labour to repair is approx. £4,000.

Depends on insurance company, they were talking 60 to 75% of the value at max for a repaire job on my mcrae before they knew how much it would actually be.

80% seems more likely a write off, might be worth a buy back though.

ouch!!

it's a shame that cost of repair is usually the main factor in deciding a write off.

i'd have thought that losing the structural integrity of the car was enough to necessitate a write off so i hope you get a new (old) one.

My gut feeling is that car will be written off as 03-CTR says the integral strenght of the car will be weakened.

PS Here are some parts prices for your "info" and amusement:

Avonspeed Tyre £240.00
1 x near side trailing arm £1,306.83
1 x brake pipe £80.00
1 x rear sub frame £998.00
Couple of washers are £106.00 each - the list goes on.

Not cheap to fix then...........................perhaps I won't have one after all.

not so, i bet the garage has quoted for all new parts, ins co,s will now demand things like placcy bumpers be repaired where possible rather than replace, however B*ntly & R* do extract the p*** with parts pricing... how they can justify £80 for a brake pipe, you can get brided ones at silly lengths for much less than that... and what really really pisses you off is they screw there supplier rotten for cost downs year on year, and they put there prices up year on year..
