There was a news story yesterday (buggered if I can find a link) where a dog owner had to pay £25,000 compensation to his neighbour because his dog killed the neighbours cat. In the owner's garden!

I'll see what I can dig up on Sky News...

story on legal site here but it's actually in America so not quite as shocking... lol

The cat was killed in the cat owner's garden, not the dog owner's, so I can just about see the justification. If the cat was in the dog's garden, then it should be fair game.

Yeah, I'm sure that's not how they pitched it on Radio 1 yesterday but never mind. All the same, it's nature isn't it?

Fair game.....lock and load.....what goes around comes around...the hunter becomes the hunted....etc etc

I blame the owners ....... for not overfeeding their felines...the ones round here are so fat they can barely move

Well considering felines were introduced to this country relatively recently by humans and it is through humans poor ability to look after cats that they are allowed to roam wild, then no, it isn't nature, it's humans fu**ing up their environment again. Time to get control of cats added to the Kyoto agreement

Sorry the bird died, I'll see if Mrs Leslie can identify it when she gets back later.

No way to train that instinct out of a cat or to stop it from roaming. We are lucky that our cat won't chase birds when they are feeding on our back garden, but he takes no prisoners when the rats pinch the bird food!

Sorry to hear that the bird died.

I used to be indifferent to cats but since I caught one in MY garden doing its nail scratchy thing on my convertible classic saab they have now gone in my room 101!

Supersoaker at the ready.

Can't wait until circumstances are right to get another dog.

Judging by its beak, I'd say probably a Thrush or Blackbird.

Sorry mate, dont agree. There is nothing natural about an artificially maintained population of domestic cats, if the cats were feral then you would have a point.

According to RSPB figures cats kill six million birds in Britain annually, that's a lot of birds.

No, it is NOT "only nature". Nature never intended domestic cats to be roaming freely in our environment.

It looks to me as if it is/was more or less fully fledged i.e. ready to leave the nest. In which case it would be getting on for being fully grown. My money is still on a Thrush or Blackbird. Almost certainly not a member of the Crow family as the beak/head shape is "wrong".

Looks like a baby blackbird

They usually leave the nest and run around on the ground for 1-2wks before learning to fly. Makes them easy prey to cats, small children, etc

Count them, do they?

Presumably, all those who say that cats shouldn't be allowed to roam free and kill birds, will also accept that we shouldn't drive cars, in case we run over a wild animal. For God's sake, get over it!

er i think youll find that most people dont go out of their way to run stuff over you feckwit
of course using your logic you wont have a problem with me trapping your cat for food then?(or will that involve the police) or my kids being let out late at night to be a general annoyance, damage your property etc(or will that involve an ASBO)

Name calling, eh? Very mature! Cats don't have consciences, do you think they kill birds just to wind up people like you and ajm?

But you should know the difference between right and wrong, not sure you can expect a cat to have any morals. In any case, the examples you use involve illegal acts, and they can hardly be compared to letting a cat out of the house (even if you'd like them to be).

no ,i think they kill birds because thier selfish owners are unable to fulfill thier pets needs and therefore should not be allowed that kind of pet in the first place
(as an aside i have no problem with cats at all-or any pet which is kept in a responsible manner-cept spiders they are the work of satan )
i do know the difference between right and wrong which is why i'd never let my kids roam free to do whatever they saw fit-same with my pets.
i have to activly stop the cat getting into my ferret cage(must be a bit dull-the cat that is) to stop the inevitable(legal) outcome
i just wish that some cat owners would take a more socially responsible attitude toward thier pets-most do but as usuall its the vocal minority that cause "people like me and ajm"(thats good when you know nowt about me)to tarnish the rest with the same brush
