Reporting an assault
In the same style as having to report an accident, if I've witnessed an act of road rage (driver gets out and punches another thru the driver's window), do I need to contact the local Police myself..?
I caught up with the 'victim' later on and handed him the details of the license plate of the other vehicle, but just don't know whether I'm supposed to report it myself or not. Maybe it's just for the driver to pursue if he wants..?
Jonts.

Did you leave your details as a witness?
IIRC with assault, the victim has to press charges, if they do not then nothing gets done.
As a witness, I dont think you have to do anything, but it doesn't do any harm does it, plod wont do anything if they don't have to but it covers your ****.

As said above, if the victim did not report it then there is very little the Police can do and your call will in effect be wasted. However, if they did report it then they would be very glad of an independent witness as this adds a huge amount of weight to the evidence.
You need to think about if you were on the receiving end and whether you would want someone to call on your behalf. If they havent reported it then you've lost nothing apart from the time to make the call... If they have then you're doing them a huge favour.
The choice is yours.

I witnessed a fecking loon in a mk4 golf driving literally like a joyrider on the opposite side of the road getting past the queue of traffic we were all in. The road got to a roundabout and he cut in front of a big Merc with an elderly couple in it with the woman driving. She tooted her horn and that was that. Golf man slowed right down to a snails pace and we proceeded for a couple of miles until we got to traffic lights. Golf man gets out with no top on 3/4 length baggy trousers and white trainers holding an empty Smirnoff bottle (large litre bottle) and proceeds to smash the bottle on the windscreen of the Merc The old couple are clearly terrified and Golf man is just mouthing of to them and is looking like this could turn very nasty. Then the lights change, golf man jumps back in his car with mates (who were all egging him on and laughing) and thats the end of that. The Merc goes off in the same direction so no one gets a chance to check if the old couple are ok.
Needless to say the incident happened very quickly. I got home and call the cops straight away thinking the worst that the Merc has followed the Golf and its all gone horribly wrong down a country lane so give the Police the details of the two cars, their occupants and the location of the incident and were they headed off. The cops were very gratefull for the call and told me that I'd done the right thing.

I witnessed an assault once, someone was being escorted out of a pub by a security guard; he was walking quietly and calmly and not offering any resistance. As soon as they were outside the door, the bouncer punched this guy in broad daylight, then proceeded to threaten me and the group of friends I was with.
We flagged down a passing policeman and told him what had happened. He took our details but said there was nothing they could do unless the victim reported the assault. Obviously if he did, then we could act as independent witnesses.
I heard nothing further.

Thanks for the replies folks, although I'm very late with my own one here. I decided to call the local Constabulary and explained the situation. Whilst they (Thames Valley Police) didn't need to record any details, they told me it was a good call to ring them up just in case.
Cheers,
Jonty.
