Best bet is to start on Google. Plenty of research papers available. As for product, have a look at skype and also solwise.co.uk do a VoIP handset IIRC.

You should be able to get some whitepapers off of cisco.com, well lets face it, they have cornered a large chunk of the market , Also the MNS websites, BT, Equant..

Cheers

I would just learn about data networks - voice is little different from any other "data" service using the IP protocol. It just requires some QOS.

But thanks to our wonderful mobile operators, we are ready to put up with poor quality phone calls.

CISCO seem to have the new office systems market share but many systems suppliers offers upgrades to offer VOIP cards and IP telephony cards etc.

Check out sipgate.co.uk they are doing VoIP, we are a traditional LCR minutes business and we are trialling a VoIP service too. These arent the numpty usb phone on your PC deals, Im talking about a VoIP phone plugged into a router connected to a gateway that offers VoIP->VoIP, VoIP->PSTN and PSTN->Voip as well as voicemail, auto-attendant and IP centrex. Sipgate are also doing what we will offer and that is as an annex 2 provider be able to port an existing geographical number to VoIP. All exciting stuff for sure. Quality wise we have been testing using standard ADSL and the quality has varied slightly but all in all pretty good.

Cisco are certainly ploughing a lot into VoIP & IPT, but it doesn't mean they're the best (far from it actually). Have a look at Avaya and Nortel as well.

I'll have chat with some of the VoIP specialist and see what qualifications they are working towards.
