Question Disclosing current salary at a job interview..

What's the accepted reply to the question of your current salary when at a job interview? Got one coming up shortly and I know it's going to be asked. I don't want to prejudice the amount that they may offer..

Cheers

You have to be honest, there going to get your P45 if you take a job with them so they will find out sooner or later.

No point in lying as they will see it from your P45 or on the reference. If they want you bad enough, they'll be willing to pay for you, regardless of wehat you are on now.

Being caught out lieing probably wouldn't be a good start. Unless it's in sales, in which case them them about the 'copter & company chick currently at your disposal.

I think by law you dont have to tell them, so you could try saying that you dont want to disclose your current salary.

I've always said "About £xxxxx", and rounded the figure up slightly. Seems to have worked well enough

As above, but always emphasise any extras such as final salary pension, bonus, share reward schemes, car allowance, health care benefits etc etc which you want to be compensated for if you leave you current employer.

Thanks chaps. I wasn't planning on fibbing.. I'd just rather not tell them initially and let them make their offier.. I'll tell them I'd rather not sat at this point and see what they come pack with..

Tell them you can't tell them as you take your current company's Policy on this very seriously and you don't want to run the risk of being sacked for discussing Salary outside the Company

Do what I did - give the honest answer but say they make a contribution to your commuting travel costs as an over and above - I told my current lot I got an extra tenner a week towards petrol...

...and your P45 does say anything about how many hols you get a year... doesn't get you any more cash but at least you don't have to work as much.

...agree with all the above - plus re-iterate that one of your reasons for moving is for an increase in salary.

Good luck!

Also, there's a note on P45's saying that if you don't want to disclose details of your income to your new employer, you can forward the copy for your new employer direct to the Inland Revenue and warning that you may pay an incorrect amount of tax for a period until things get sorted out.

i gave my interview a figure reflecting the market worth.

i Knew what they were prepared to go up to, they pitched 2k higher than i told them.

its a two way thing, if they can get you on same money, they will,

given that most firms know roughly what each firm in a similar ilk pays, its not to difficult to tell when some one is pushing it...

i know one guy who went and upped his by 10k he didnt get it
