Default 300 + BHP, ten years down the line ?

Was just reading Autocar and pondering, there are an awful lot of mega powered motors around at the moment (so it seems reading car mags), 300 bhp these days is commonplace so I set to thinking what is going to happen as these monsters filter downwards, case in point the new Monaro 6.0, 400 bhp for 36 grand, the Lotus Carlton Caused an outrage back in the early nineties for a 'mere' 375 bhp and that was a limited edition oddity for 50 odd grand, the Monaro is coupe but it isnt a super limited run and there is a proliferation of aging 400 bhp cars like the previous M5.

So, whats going to happen, apart from the enthusiasts getting hold of and cherishing cars like that its ineviatable that pond scum will aquire such vehicles and wreak havoc, currently there arent many really big power second hand cars for little money so they command a premium, for example even ancient M5's are still pricey.

You can have 200 bhp for a grand if you look hard enough, so in ten years are we going to have 300/400 bhp cars for not much more, obviously I hope so and cant wait but it does concern me, load of chav ***** in a 400 bhp car on knackered budget tyres with various broken/disabled electronics that used to keep things in check ?

see what you getting at, though i dont think theres much diff a unresponsible chav bucket being in a 3000bhp car or a 400bhp car, can see imprezas are starting to be affordable to those with less money, myself for example!

think people with money are just as likely to drive like *******, just look at merc and BMW drivers!

though do agree about them running illegal tyres etc.. due to money. prob more likely to not be insured too.

as technolagy improves its inevitable cars will get more and more powerful.

though i have a sneaky feeling the government will bring in increasingly annoying guidlines/restrictions like emmisions etc.. that will stop it all in its tracks.

imagine the Scoobs and Evo's we could have with no noise and emmision regulations....mmmmmm

I think it is likely that cars with very powerful engines will be eventually be excluded from the roads. It wont be long before all those who hate cars anyway will latch on to it and create a commotion about it. They will have all the arguments at their fingertips too of course.

The more that people drive around with noisy cars etc. upsetting them, the more ammunition they will have and the Roman sandal wearers will jump on it as an excuse to push us off the roads. They only have to order the insurance companies to refuse us!

perhaps the old 280bhp gentlemans agreement in japan was for a reason.

Very good thread, and something I hadn't considered.

I guess a 500bhp wasn't worth building after all!

I thought the same when the GTI's and GTE's came out in the 80's. I thought what would happen when these powerful 150bhp+ cars get into the hands of the 'herberts'. Well we know know don't we - neons, slammed, graphics and zorst. See scoobynet gallery for examples The same will happen with the more powerful cars and it'll be that they fall off the road a bit quicker than before.

obviously not because the first thing you did after making your point was drop it to 430BHP.
