Question Any dentists on here?

To cut a long story short, my mum went into hospital to have an operation and they have lost ALL her belongings...yes EVERYTHING......
She is now asking for her teeth, which up until now we haven`t said anything as she is going to hit the roof when she finds out!!!!!

Who/how do we go about getting a dentist to go the hospital and doing the impressions and rushing it through the system as she cannot eat properly without teeth....(obviously!!!!)
The hospital have admitted liability but are really slow at helping us out here...we don`t know what to do next.....so any help would be appreciated....
Thanks.

Joan.

So, who lost her belongings? You people or hospital? If it was hospital, they should sort it and bear the cost for the new set.If it was you, ring around private practitioner if he/she would do the job. Will cost you bomb!

The hospital have dentists on their books - get them to sort it, you don't really need to be involved?

The hospital lost her belongings, they put all her things in a 'clinical waste' bag because they had run out of 'patient property' ones...... they have agreed to pay for a new set of teeth, among other things that wee lost, including all costs, but they say we have to find a dentist who will go and do the necessary at the hospital. The hospital has got a dentist attached but apparently they don`t do dentures??????

Until she has no teeth, you can buy a Kenwood New York Smoothie and blend her foods for her.Ask hospital to pay for that too.I bought it in Currys for I think about 40-50 quid.I do have teeth tho
Hope it works out ok for you Joan.

Joan, you have no idea how common this is.

Get the most expensive, specialist, private practitioner to do this.
Your mum should have the very best replacements as it is not her fault.

Also write to the Chief Exec at the Hospital expressing your disgust and asking for a suggestion as to how he/she proposes to compensate your mum for the inconvenience at what is already a stressful time.

Mr Lewis, you are mistaken.
They have no facility to produce dentures

What a mess for you to sort out. At least they have admitted responsiblity, which is more than Watford General where somebody removed a rather valuable watch (sentimental and money) off a 93 year old bed ridden pensioner, frantic with worry over losing it and who died within 24 hours of being discharged
Good luck and get the best!

Went to see my mum today....kept off the subject of teeth.....she is in isolation in Intensive Care....(Chase Farm Hospital of all places )

Going to phone the 'P.A.L.S' people at the hospital tomorrow and see what they can do...also I have an issue with the surgeon concerned, but I wont do anything about that until she is home and well.....I can`t believe that this hospital is in such a disgusting state....I know there isn`t much money about but the paint is peeling off the walls, which doesn`t look nice, the borders around the walls have been ripped off by kids, the handles on the door are all chipped and it makes you wonder why people have a go about the hospital......
I must be fair though, the doctors and nurses in Intensive Care have been fantastic and there is someone watching my mum all the time.....more than I can say for the other two wards she was in before she was rushed down to surgery due to her bowel fluids leaking into the body, the surgeon concerned was notified at 8.30am on Monday morning and he came and had a look, (She was quite ill by this stage as it happened overnight) but nothing was done until I phoned the Cancer nurse and asked her to go and check on my mum, which thank god she did, as when she got there she was on deaths door and they only gave her a 10% of survival....The surgeon was called the ICU nurses were called the theatre was cleared and people came running from everywhere...never seen the NHS move so quick in all my life!!!!! She was finally operated on at 3pm that Monday afternoon, and has been in Intensive Care ever since, although progress is slow, she is gradually getting there........

Thanks for all replies...
Joan.

You really aint having a very good time with the hospital, i read ur other thread before this one and only jus put the the two names and senarios together. Hope everything okay or at least getting there. Just to add that you say ur mum didnt get one to one attention on the other wards she has been on, on a normal ward there is around 8 patients to one nurse, in a high dependancy unit its one nurse to 2 patients and only in ITU do u get one to one nursing.

I do realise that on a 'normal ward' there is a higher patient/nurse ratio...but the ward she was in when this 'leak' happened the nurses/doctors left my mum for six hours, well longer actually, because she was ill in the night, she was deteriorating (spelling???) rapidly....it was only that I (30 miles away at the time) phoned the Cancer Nurse and asked her to check on my mum that anything was done...I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn`t phoned at that time.....

I think 'them upstairs' are watching my mum and in some kind of weird way they are keeping her in ITU and giving us these problems to sort out so that she does get the nursing that she needs.....that probably only makes sense to those that believe in spiritualism....!!!!!

Anyway, my sister is going up again later and I`ll get another update of how she is doing when she rings me later......

If you really want a scary ratio of nursing staff, on the ward i used to work on we had the most number of beds on a ward in the entire hospital, 39 beds. At night there was usually 2 trained nurses and one auxialiary or a student nurse. And that was on a good night, sometimes it was just 2 nurses. Not much for 39 patients on a surgical ward, all of whom can deteriote throught the night.
