yeah, I did the same then it dawned on me why anyone would want to ask about NYC's nightlife given it's world famous.
Didn't know there was life in York never mind nightlife probably full of students I'd image

I went there on a stag do last year and thought it was a real rough hole.
Walking up one street minding our own business and got showered by a load of broken glass from bottles that got thrown. Coppers were straight onto them and piled them into a van before I knew what was going on.
The pubs are all really small and all seem to shut at 11:00pm.
Not a place I want to go out on the beer again to.
Damian.

York is lovely, they've made a real effort on it lately, when I moved away 20 years ago it was an utter sh!thole, which it is not now, I go back at least once a year.
Its so much better than going out "darn sarth" as there is a much wider range of ages out, and the people are sooooo much more friendly - oh, and the beer is on the whole a hell of a lot better
Last time went out on a pub crawl with my sis and her hubby and my mum and dad, and we had a superb night going round all the proper pubs, not like the south which have all turned into sh!te bars

eating placed i'd recommend are:
http://www.fiestamehicana.co.uk/ for some decent mexican and the siam house, 63a goodram gate for thai. there's also a good french restaurant (can't recall the name) behind the jorvic centre (castlegate iirc).
