Buy a CD lens cleaner disc (or open it up, and brush the dust off the lens with a soft brush). If that doesn't fix it, and it's worth less than £100, you might as well junk it and get a new one.

It'll be the optical pickup unit which is usually a Sony item.
Just for information depending which one it is, they can be purchased from www.cpc.co.uk for between £12 and £25 + VAT
( http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSea...&Ntk=gensearch )
The most common unit fitted is the KSS210 followed by the KSS213 and they don't really require a whole lot of setting up if any, so don't let any repairer fob you off with the usual mechanic style sucking through the teeth noises!!
(Sorry to any honest mechanics reading this!!!)

Hi
I would try to clean the lense first. Use a soft cotton bud, lightly moistened with video head cleaner spray. Very gently wipe the clear lense a couple of times, then use another clean bud and repeat once. This should restore playing if it was dirty.
If cleaning didnt restore it then a new laser assy is required Kss210 has been superceded by kss213, like mentioned the part cost about £10-15 trade. Very easy to do shouldnt cost a great deal, depends on how much you like your hifi.
Dont take it to a big store to have repaired they will fleece you. Take it to a well established local repairer. Dont forget that these firms are dissappearing at a rapid rate- support your local repairman, and its more environmentally sound to replace a part.
edit -also apply a small amount of light oil to the silver guides that hold the laser assy.( become dry and cause the pickup to leap forward instead of moving slowly)

Actually, i have an old Arcam Delta 250 transport that is gathering dust because it needs a new laser - anyone on SN know where i can get one, as Arcam themselves don't carry stocks any longer? Cheers.
