Why pay homage to a coke dealing crook who ripped off the British tax payer?

I remember Mad Magazine's spoof of Back to the Future and the comment about using a DeLorean as the time machine; the prof explained to Marty "I thought it was most appropriate seeing as he did time for building it!"

He was the man that represents the Tory party almost perfectly - me, me, me, me and sod the rest!
Maggie would have been really proud of him had he been a decade later!

Hard to believe I shook his hand.
The year the De Lorean was released he did a personal appearance at Earls Court. I went along, he was giving out flyers for the car, I took one and shook his hand.
I've still got the flyer somewhere, although no idea where I carefully stored it

Then we had years of the conservatives trying to get some money back via the courts for false acounting practices by Andersen's for DeLorean, which was written off by the New Labour Government as soon as they got back into power.
Funny old world isnt it.

IIRC He was target for an FBI/DEA sting operation purely because it was widely known that he was looking for a large amount of finance to prop up DMC, they thought they could get him to agree to smuggle cocaine because at that point he really was desperate. Not only was he eventually acquitted of all charges, the judge in the case recommended that charges be brought against the government agencies responsible for the operation.

To save you the bother of looking it up, it was one Nicholas Winterton, MP for Macclesfield. And yes, he is Conservative

OK, so maybe slapped wrists for JDL, however, the car, well, how many of us have wanted one, due to the Back To The Future films? I know I've hankered for one, ok, they are not that reliable and the (volvo? - why do I think it was a V6 volvo engine?) engine is a bit lacking in power, but oh, the look of the thing
