just wanna know are backfire system illegal on the road.
there were a chav driving near meadowhall, with his car sounding like a dying fox

More likely a flamer kit to make people think it's an anti lag system.
Or he has a very very wild camshaft (which being a chav...I'd very very very much doubt it).
Legally, don't know.. If it makes loads of noise then you have a case, or if the emissions are too high.

I was at Scoobyclinic a few weeks back, and Adam & Pat were telling me of a "Pops & Bangs" map that they had done for a customer. The basics (which are a bit beyond me, so don't flame me if I get it too wrong) I was told are that the ECU is programmed to wildly adjust the ignition timing on over-run so the fuel doesn't get ignited in the cylinders, but rather gets pushed down the exhaust where it combusts due to the heat causing massive backfiring when used with a decat. Sounded ridiculous to me, and apparantly the guy who had it done was in a hurry to get it removed after a rather embarrassing scene on a US military base he was working on.
