Default employment law anyone?

I need a quick answer..

I have just rang work because louise isnt well, basically she cannot walk around at the minute very well.

her parents cant get here, and my parents are away.

so im the only person available to look after her.

I have rang work and asked for an emergency days holiday, they have asked the manager and she said no sorry.

is there anything I can do? I dont want to lose my job, but then again, I dont want to leave lou on her own in this state.

any ideas?

If it's a one off I don't see they can do anything.

Have a word with your managers boss, maybe they will be more reasnoble?

Try this website

I don't think you can be penalised for taking time off to look after a dependent in an emergency, tho you may have to take it as unpaid leave.

IMO your manager is being unreasonable.

Phone her again, and ask her nicely to reconsider. If she doesn't, apologise for having to do it, but as its an emergency ask to speak to her superior.

That will probably change her mind

Phone them and tell them that you wont be in as its a family emergency.
Tell them that you are also planning to use the day as unpaid leave.
At the very worst, they can only issue you with a verbal warning, as this would be your first warning wouldn't it?

ok what a result!

I spoke to a representative of the trade union for work, he went and talked to the manager in question, and I have just had a VERY apologetic phone call!

Missyc the website you gave me was very very helpfull thankyou so much! I quoted from that website, alan the guy on the other end sounded like he was sh!tting bricks, I was eva so slightly miffed.

Feel better now though.

Glad you got it sorted.

Let's hope the Managers at your place have learnt a bit today about statutory rights for employees

richieh - that DTI site is a great source of info. Bookmarked
