I wouldn't unless it was VERY cheap, inspected by an independant garage i was paying and i was going to keep it for years.
There's a lot of cars that aren't CAT C or D out there...

Some cars nowadays are getting written off for nowt!
You cant get a Bumper supplied and fitted at a main agent for under a grand!
It depends upon the severity of the damage and the quality of the repair.

I wouldn't have a problem, as long as it was a well recognised repairer. I'd actually rather buy it myself damaged, and get it repaired at somewhere I knew. Bear in mind that a fairly minor front ender in a Scooby can write it off. If they suspect engine damage, or if the air bags have gone, that alone could swing a fairly light damaged car to the write off zone.
I've bought 2 damaged scoobies, and never had any problems with them afterwards. You just need to watch what you're buying.
Note that any jap car you buy could easily have been in a major smash in Japan, as that wouldn't be registered over here. And also remember that any car on the road may have been in a major accident and not be on the register, if the insurance companies didn't know about it. The vcar register doesn't know everything !!

My first RA was cat D. She had a damaged headlight, bonnet and wing. She was written of as the bodyshop had said it could be up to six months to get an ally bonnet from japan- this was back in the late 90s when there weren't many around. ended up a write-off as the owner wouldn't wait for the repair so I got a bargain.
as said above, there are a lot of cat D's written off for bugger all as its an economic decision.
do bare in mind that you might have trouble insuring a cat c or d car though...

Have to agree as well. Just bought a Cat C damaged car and I have now fixed it (all in 2 evenings) for the grand sum of.............
Wait for it..............
£80.00
All I need now is an MOT and a VIC check. I really don'y know what planet some of these insurance company engineers are on sometimes.
Worth remembering that a non-recorded car could still have had MAJOR repair work and you may never spot it. Can think of several examples.

The thing is you cant always find out if the car has been in an accident
I bought a car paid to have the HPi check which they check for accidents as well
But and this is a big but if the car isnt writen off you dont get told on the reports also they dont record 3rd party accidents what a pile
I will say one thing it depends on how bad the accident was to weather the car will be ok as WHYAYEGTI said though a silly thing like a bumper can cost you more than the car is worth
Oh and dont forget the cost of having it resprayed as well and this is before you have even thought about having to replace any damaged bits like Rads
I would say its a gamble and as long as the price is rock bottom then you can some time be quids in
Thats if you happy in a car that been in an accident..!

Not that I'm in the market, but agreed.
I'd be a looking for a car that I'd want to keep for a long time before selling on. Make sure it would be me who's having the bargain, and not the person I sold it onto...

had several cat c & d cars and motorbikes. buy them dead cheap, run them for 2 years and still sell at a profit on ebay. clearly stating on advert that it is on the hpi register. the general concern via questions is "does this affect the insurance". most people don't give 2 hoots especially if you have owned the vehicle for a couple of years and it has 12 months ticket.

No I just buy something that is supposed to be perfect and turns out to be dog-****.
Bought a Pug 309 with front end damage for 104 quid (dont know what the 4 quid was about) and foxed it for another 30, serviced it for another 30, stood me at less than 200 quid, ran it for 10,000 miles and sold it for 450 quid, that was a cat D.

I still drive a car today that 6 years ago was what would now be described as a cat B write off. Provided you are certain that the repair work is bona fide, and the vehicle is cheap enough to offset the fact that when the time comes you'll have to sell it for less than an unregistered equivalent, go for it.
Also, as has been said, because ins co's insist on using new genuine parts, the repair costs can soon go high enough to make minor damage uneconomical to repair.

My cousin bought a nearly new but damaged (then repaired it) Golf for half its actual value and has run it for 8 years, nobody would bother checking it against HPI now so it depends how long you want to keep it,

Bought and owned a CAT C Cav SRi for AGES with no problems at all. Seller was very open about it all. Front end shunt had taken out bonnet, wings bumper et al and was written off. He walked into a scrappy and found the exact same colour Cav Sri which had been written off in a REAR end shunt.
Git really fell on his feet with that one
The car was no problem at all and the first guy to see it bought it when it came time to move on.
