Default classic gvmt statistic - also speed NOT biggest killer shock!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4324281.stm

"Office for National Statistics show the number of deaths linked to MRSA doubled in four years between 1999 and 2003", and yet.... "The number of antibiotic-resistant MRSA infections in England has fallen to the lowest since recording began, the government has said", even though.... "The latest figures show there were 3,940 patients infected in the six months leading up to April 2004, compared with 3,598 between April and September 2001."

It just doesnt add up! Classic spin! I nominate it for the Golden Roundabout spin award.

But also more shocking further down is the fact that " 5,000 people die annually from Hospital Acquired Infections, more than are killed on Britain's roads " So its not Speed thats doing the killing, its Britains dirty hospitals. Hmmmmm

Especially given that, according to Transport Research Laboratory report 323, just 7.3% of road accidents are actually caused by speed. That's 92.7% that are caused by something else!

Maybe the superbug causes the road accidents?

It can't be that, because they don't get it UNTIL they get to hospital!

Quote 1):
the number of deaths linked to MRSA doubled
Quote 2):
The number of ... MRSA infections ... fallen to the lowest since recording began
Obvious answer: fewer infections, but more of them are fatal. Exactly what you'd expect as the disease became more resistant.

Actually I don't believe the second for a good reason: never mind anything the government may or may not have been doing; hospitals have been covering MRSA up since it was discovered. Under the last Tory government. Like most such stats the reporting rate is simply a reflection of how much the hospitals want to admit, not what is actually happening.

How many of the people who die from superbugs are in hospital due to car accidents though?

Whats really shocking here is that the NEW figures dont include infections over the winter period which is when there are the most cases!!!!! Talk about spin!

Another interesting interpretation of statistics. Although 7.3% of road accidents are caused by speed (and remember that could be excess speed for conditions without exceding the speed limit), according to "tonight with Trevor McDonald" 2 weeks ago, this new adaptive speed control thing where the car won't let you speed "would instantly stop 2/3 of all road casualties"

One other interesting statistic, as it's the only one on here I believe. Tony BLiar is only lying about 30% of the time. As for the other 70% - well 30% of the time he's asleep, 10% eating, and the other 30% doing things that don't involve talking.
