Diet Coke - Aspartame
Aspartame.
Can this really cause brain tumours like i have been told and read on the net? I was told recently that diet coke is worse for you than the regular stuff, and a gym buff at work said today that the sweetner has stopped being used in america.

I happen to work for a well known drinks manufacturer who make a product similar to the one you're mentioning (hint, hint) and the statement and consequent health scare caused by it a few years ago is almost true. Yes aspartame can do all the things people say it can but in a few rare cases and if you drink literally gallons a day every day of your life for the next thousand years or so!

never had it myself. altho its *probably* a myth, theres generally no smoke without fire. aside from which, anything where u look at the list of ingredients and it says a whole bunch of stuff you can't even pronounce... that's not a good bet to be consuming.

Why is it that somebody posts a link explaining about some myth or other and 2 posts later somebody else reaffirms the myth??

Can someone produce some FACTS here.
Is it illegal in the U.S. If so, can someone point me to the proof of this. What do they put in Diet Coke/Pepsi in the U.S then?
A quick search on the internet seems to imply that there's a lot of hoaxes about aspartame. See the snopes link above. If it really is as dangerous as people (who are these people btw?) imply then it'd be illegal everywhere.
I wonder how many of you that avoid aspartame smoke, drink, eat takeaway/fast food, any food for that matter etc. There's a scare story for everything these days People need to provide EVIDENCE, not co-incidences. I was ill the other week, now I've been drinking water all my life so that must be to blame as everyone who has ever been ill has drunk lots of water in their life

I'm not sure it's banned in the US, more that products have to carry a warning like on cigarettes (albeit somewhat less along the lines of "PEPSI KILLS")..
This was certainly the case no more than 18 months ago.

Hello
Nutrasweet (the original brand name for Aspartame until all the scares) was supposedly rushed through the FDA without adequate testing.
There are lots of websites around saying how bad it is, it ISN'T banned in America.
The labelling mentioned above refers to saccharine which "has shown to cause cancer in rats".
Steve.

Hello
Just looked at some chewing gum (nice Trident cinnamon flavour) sitting next to me, and the warning is:
"Use of this product may be hazardous to your health. This product contains saccharin which has been determinded to cause cancer in laboratory animals".
Delightful.

A South African guy in the office told me about this last week - evidently it's a fairly well accepted fact in SA?
I don't have the choice though if I want a fizzy drink - I'm diabetic

Then I read an article somewhere about aspartame and thought "I wonder?". So I stopped drinking diet coke, and stopped having the stuff in tea and coffee. Lo and behold, the headaches tapered off.
Then a few months back I ate a packet of crisps. One of the new Walkers flavours, sweet chilli something or other. And a couple of hours later I got a headache. When I checked the ingredients, it turned out the "sweet" bit was supplied by aspartame - in a packet of crisps FFS.
These days I don't buy any sort of fizzy drink without reading the ingredients very carefully first! The worrying thing is that, whether the scares are justified or not, I definitely appear to be sensitive to the stuff and it's becoming increasingly difficult to avoid it in almost any sort of processed foods.

I had a long chat to my dentist about fizzy drinks - it was the first question he asked me when he saw the x-rays of my teeth. I'd suffered enamel errosion and he said did I drink Coke etc. I said yes, but I always try and stick to the diet version or PepsiMax etc. He said it didin't matter.
Aspartame aside, the biggest problem with these drinks is the fizzy water - which is acidic. This is what attacks your teeth. When I saw the x-rays of my teeth it was frightening. I've always been addicted to these drinks, but I've all but given them up now. Do a search on Google - there is loads of information available about this.

The thing that always puzzled me is that when I used to compete in triathlon, the pro's swore by Pepsi Max. They'd drink a can after each race because they were convinced it stopped them getting ill from all the nasties they may have ingested during the swim stage.
