Too late Moses; theyve wiped their ***** on the Bill of Rights (even though it cant be repelead by Parliament ffs) At this moment theyre looking for the Magna Carta in order to do the same. Between the nannying of the Labour Government and that of the socialist Eropean Union we'll be living in what amounts to a police state within ten years.

If the black box data was used for:-
a) pure research (i.e. it would only be used by engineers to help understand accident damage and use it to make cars and roads safer)
b) prosecution ONLY where someone has been killed or seriously injured
then I see no problem. Of course the bigger problem is stopping "mission creep" once you let such technology into cars. Initially it might be used as above, later it could be used as a spy in every car in the name of "national security". Tony Blair has already said safety from terrorists is the dominant human right!

Agreed - possibly OK, but would depend a lot on exactly what information was collected and what was done with it. 'Mission creep' is indeed the worry. It's also worth bearing in mind that a device that's used to apportion blame after an accident is still doing nothing to actually prevent them happening in the first place.
Far better to spend the cost of the box on providing free or subsidised advanced driving lessons IMHO.

Hate to tell you this, but your airbag controller already can store some such data, and has been used in the USA to deny a chap's claim. IIRC he had an off at over 100mph, claimed he wasn't speeding, and the deceleration records from the airbag sensor showed up that he was telling porkies...
I'd google for it, but I can't be bothered. It's an exercise for the interested reader

As others have mentioned, providing there isn't scope creep I don't see a problem with it as such, I just don't see how it will reduce accidents, unless they are suggesting that the record could help improve long term vehicle safety and encourage road engineering improvements. It is unlikely to change driver habits if it is only accessed after a crash, and I personally don't want a full time electronic spy in my boot.

Scope creep – you betcha
Who owns the data? These things will be hacked pretty quickly, your boss or friendly dealer will be able to easily check your driving habits and of course report it to the Police (of course they’d say they have a duty to).
I used to work with flight data recorders and saw “scope creep” first hand and that’s with pilot unions keeping an eye on the handling of data – who would represent car drivers – I can see a massive free for all.
If the sole use for these is accident investigation, that may sound fine – but this really is the thin end of a much different wedge.
Personally I think decent driver education would be a much better way of reducing crashes, after all this (black boxes) won’t address the cause, just say what happened – all that will happen is that loads of data will be collected and not used (in the aviation industry FDR data gets analysed and fed back to improve safety – it’s a closed loop – I can’t see this happening with cars).
As far as this coming out of Europe goes, it could just as easily come from our own “civil service” – I don’t see an issue there.
