Thumbs down Blair appeases unions in run up to election

By announcing and increase in the minimum wage. That’s nice of him to pledge to hand out money to chav scums and migrants at the expense of business.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4296097.stm

Of course the real effect will be increased poverty and more people out of work as the effects of this on small business take hold.

Still, makes for a nice easy to understand headline and sound bite for the thicko Labour supporters.

Unveiling the latest increase in Downing Street, Mr Blair said he wanted the minimum wage to become a "symbol of decency and fairness" like the NHS.
Yea right...

I know I shouldn't feed the troll, but...

Why are people on minimum wage 'chav scum'? They are workers, probably more than you even as they don't spend their entire day posting political tripe on a car-related bbs.

I see nothing wrong with a fair day's pay for a fair day's work. Anything else would be exploitation, surely??

Conservative leader Michael Howard said: "We have accepted the principle of the minimum wage and we certainly wouldn't seek to reduce the level of the minimum wage. The increase is not something we would seek to disturb."

If the Conservatives support this move (which they do), I'm not sure what your point is.

As an employer myself, I will most likely have to lose a couple of people, perhaps more when this legislation becomes law.

It already is law, they're just increasing the minimum. It's only an increase of £0.20/hr. Your margins must be seriously stressed in you have to lose staff due to that.

No worse than howard appeasing the retired lot by reducing their council tax.

Seeing as the UK has a rapidly aging population with the majority being closer to retirement than starting their careers, I've yet to hear how he's going to afford it without massively increasing the taxes laid upon the younger generation. Especially when you hear that he wants to increase funding for schools, police forces, possibly reduce income tax etc as well.

The money has to come from somewhere....

You would be surprised how these apparently small increases in overheads can accumulate over a period of time. Especially when multiplied by ‘n’ number of employees. It’s not so much the figures but the trend that is worrying given that the TUC wants the minimum set at £6 ph or more.

I agree with that part. At £6.00 my lowest paid staff would probably need a small increase. Although I expect inflationary rises would have moved them off that bracket by the time MW reaches £6. However, there would be the "I'm only getting £x more than I could get in McDonalds, you have to pay me more" argument getting trotted out.

Hey lewis just think. Your wage as a Morrisons car park trolly attendant might go up as a result of this. That'll guarentee you vote for Tony won't it.

No, I had a book when I was a kid called 'Strange Stories/Amazing Facts' and he was in it. Such an intersting story, rarely meet people who have heard of him.

I'm not surprised
A little while later, Spring Heeled Jack was said to have attacked a group of people - 3 women and 1 man. All ran but Polly Adams, who was left behind. Spring Heeled Jack tore off the top of her blouse, grabbed her breasts, and began clawing at her stomach.

Ah, great days. Polly used to love a bit of 'clawing'
