Just watched an interesting program on narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is basically a sleep disorder where the patient cannot control their sleep and nod off frequently with little/no warning.
What was really interesting was the discovery that a chemical called arexin in our brains control sleep. So much so that the brains 'natural' state is sleeping and we are only awake when arexin is being circulated around the systems of our brain.
Of course now there is research into how to produce such a chemical an a form that we can take and the implications are obvious for narcolepsy suferrers. Interestingly though such discovery could transform society. Need to be awake all week 24/7........no problem
Found it all very interesting, thought I'd share it Personally I get nervous when science f's around with seemingly natural things. I expect we sleep for 6-8 hours out of every 24 for a reason. If I may quote the Gonnies () "Um Brand, god put that rock there for a purpose and, um, I'm not so sure you should move it"
What would happen if you went a week, month, year without sleep.....

Funny story about this:
One night im in a bar, queueing for a cash machine, when this girl just collapses on the floor. Her boyfriend (presumably), picks her straight up and she seems ok and starts talking again as normal. I just presumed she was drunk and thought nothing more of it. A few minutes later she does it again, collapses and then gets straight up and starts talking. Im slightly concerned by now and ask him if shes ok. He just smiles and tells me shes narcoleptic. For the next 15 minutes (it was a very long queue) she continues to do this at regular intervals maybe 3 more times , collapsing mid-sentence andthen leaving me in absolute stitches everytime. Very immature i know. What was also funny was dozens of people looking at me shaking their head watching me crying with laughter at this girl apparently in a total drunken stupor and also thinking 'Why doesnt he just take her home shes a disgrace..' etc etc
Shouldnt really laugh but it was funny.

i suffer from sleep paralisis, basically the chemical in your brain sends a message to your body when you fall to sleep to stop you from acting out your dreams...mine sends my body of before your mind...
its freaky cos you are concious in an asleep body.

Is this the same documentary where they show a meeting of the "Narcoleptics Society" or whatever they call themselves? They had 3 people taking minutes just in case, and half the table was asleep at any given time. LOL
