hawk owners usually do and also rabbit hunters

see ferrets go inside the burrows and chase out the rabbits and also eat them too

they can make really good pets!

ferret live for about 9 - 10 years, they can live indoors and outdoors. if they are not exercised regulary they need a really big cage, they love tubes - as they are very inquisitive, you can litter train them, they like sunbathing but can be prone to heat stroke! they love the company of others. females are seasonly polystrus and an induced ovulator, her breeding season is between march and september and she needs to be mated during her breeding season because if she is not it will led to oestrogen induced bone marrow suppresion (which is fatal) so many people people keep them with a vasectomised male (hob), or you can spay her or put her on the pill! males can be very smelly because of their scent gland, you can castrate them which will take away some of their aggression but it is not recommended to have the scent glands removed.males can live in pairs
food wise they can eat tin cat food, raw eggs in shell, whole dead rabbit or chick and of course ferret food in biscuit form!
you can get them vaccinated against many disease. ferrets and humans can give each other the flu/cold!

not sure if that helps you!

Our ferrets don't bite hard anymore, its only when they don't know who you are. Now they never bite in anger they just play bite, like a dog would. If they wanted to they can bite until there teeth meet in the middle of your finger

Some of out ferrets however have never even play biten.

They are wonderfull, inteligent, playfull animals, and a pleasure to look after.

ferrets stink, but are very cool animals. We had one years ago as a building site pet. It lived in a box outside the cabin, me and another young lad hatched a cunning plan one day to give it some live food, my mate went and bought a 20p mouse from the local petshop and we chucked it in when we thought no one looking.

The next bit is all a bit of a blur it happened so fast, it involved the heat seeking mouse missile tearing its cage apart trying to catch it's lunch, while the older blokes that has strictly prohibited from doing this ( we made the mistake of suggesting it a brewtime earlier ) went ballistic, I never knew your average on site numptie cared so much about white lab mice.

anyway, the mouse got rescued ( by order back to the petshop ), and we got bolloked, and not spoken to for a few days

eeeee, it was exiting, no regrets, the ferret was amazing, the mouse was magnificent - it lived!

got 9 all kept as pets
thing about biting is they bite just hard enough to have hold of you, usually without breaking the skin, just flick them on the nose and shout at them and theyll let go- struggle and they grip harder
play biting where they pogo up to you squeaking like a loony, nip whichever bit of you they can reach, then go squeaking backwards for you to chase them is painless
few pics

wonderful creatures

There was a woman from Sleaford? in Lincs on our local news the other day who runs a ferret sanctuary. She is looking to rehome some of them. She said they only smell if they are not neutered.

Can't remember anymore than that, but if you contact the Calendar news team at Yorkshire TV in Leeds I am sure they would put you in touch.

Cheers

Thanks people.

Anyone know roughly how much they are to buy?
What do the live in? (something like a rabbit hutch?)
Are they ok with other animals? (cats)
And are they happy on their own?
